Warnick Takes Stakes Double In Shenandoah Slam
Trainer Scott Warnick won two $27,027 Virginia Breeders Fund divisions for older horses and the $13,514 Open Handicap Pace as part of a four-win day on Saturday, May 2 at Shenandoah Downs.
K J The Thirteenth won her fourth consecutive race, and third straight in Woodstock, in the aged mare trot for Warnick. The four-year-old daughter of II Mago-My Kid Sister went coast-to-coast in the four-horse kickoff event, posting panels of :29, 59.3 and 1:29.1 and crossing the line a 1-1/2-length winner in 1:58 with driver Corey Braden aboard. K J Title (Fern Paquet Jr.) took second and Divoc (Justin Walters) finished third. Scott Woogen owns the winner, who is now 16-for-51 lifetime with a bankroll of $390,476. The win price was $2.10.
Royal Beep Beep rallied from fifth at the top of the stretch in the horse-and-gelding-trot division to snag an upset victory after being sent off at 12-1. The five-year-old Yankee Royalty-Beep Beep Bye Bye gelding was third through panels of :29 and :58.2, then was shuffled back to fifth through three-quarters in 1:28.4. But driver Eric Davis engineered a sharp closing move to make up the 2-1/2 length gap turning for home and provide the Warnick trainee a first-place cheque in 1:59.4. K J Dash finished second by a half-length, followed by Big Daddy D. Royal Beep Beep, owned by Debbie Warnick, took his 12th win in 59 career outings and has now earned $182,784. He paid $27.40 to win.
In the Open Handicap Pace, Dan Chansky's exhilarating pacer Lous Starr captured his third straight race at Shenandoah and tied the track record. The four-year-old Sweet Lou-Amantha Starr stallion wired the field, providing fractions of :27.3, :55.3 and 1:24 before stopping the clock in 1:51.4. The Warnick trainee's time equalled that of Marco Beach, who set the record in 2024. Braden has been in the sulky for all three of Lous Starr's Woodstock wins, improving the stallion's career record to 17-for-49 with $234,981 in earnings. Noblesville (Nick Roland) was 1-1/4 lengths back in second, with The Lizard (Chuck Perry) third. The win payout was $3.40.
Warnick completed his grand slam of the finale of the 15-race card, winning with Baltimore Beauty ($9.80). Following Saturday's quadruple and a pair of wins on Sunday, Warnick is 26-for-124 on the season. The trainer, based in Locust Hill, Va., posted his best total of 43 victories last year.
In other Virginia Breeders Fund action, trainer John Perry took his first career victory as Johns Dream won the aged male pace event. The 13-year-old son of Dream Away-March On In, once a track-record holder at Woodstock, wired the seven-horse field in 1:56 as the betting choice. Chuck Perry guided him to fractions of :27.2, :55.3 and 1:25.2, and the gelding came home a 1-1/4-length winner over Playin For Real (Justin Walters). Caviart Shetland (James Stiltner) took third.
Johns Dream reached the winner's circle for the 35th time in Virginia and won his 56th race overall in 161 starts, pushing his career earnings to $452,487. John Perry, Chuck Perry's son, took ownership of Johns Dream in April and became the pacer's official trainer this week. He is now one-for-two as a conditioner, having debuted with Amora Beach on April 26 and finished fifth.
In the Breeders Fund mare pace, Toys Little Tinker circled the field for her first win of the year in three starts. After sitting seventh for William Carter through early splits of :27.2 and :57.2, she came four-wide at three-quarters in 1:27 and surged past the top three at the head of the stretch, powering home for a one-length win in 1:55.4. Kelseys For Real (Justin Walters) finished second after cutting the mile, with Hillbilly Kisses (Lucas Myers) third. The winner, a four-year-old Rustys For Real-Cool Toy mare, is now 11-for-29 lifetime with $208,869 in the bank. Elwood Tignor trains her and shares ownership with Debbie Mulligan. Win tickets paid out $13.60.
Shenandoah Downs has now passed the halfway point of its spring racing season. Next weekend's Saturday and Sunday cards feature Virginia Breeders Stakes divisional legs for three-year-old pacers and trotters. Post time each day is 1:05 p.m.
