Calicojack Hanover Flies To Mohawk Open Double

Calicojack Hanover

Calicojack Hanover held off odds-on choice Bruno No No No to complete a gate-to-wire victory in the $40,000 Open Pace on Saturday May 2, going back-to-back at the top pacing level of Woodbine Mohawk Park.

Tyler Jones procured early speed from Calicojack Hanover to put him in front, and the five-year-old took a 2-1/2-length cushion as he headed to the quarter in :26.4. The field gradually reeled him in as they raced past the half in :54.4 and three-quarters in 1:21.4, with Bruno No No No (Doug McNair) on the move out of third on the final turn. With Bruno No No No and pocket-sitter Its Saturday Night (Louis-Philippe Roy) at his heels, Calicojack Hanover produced a :27 final quarter to withstand the pressure and hold on by a half-length over Bruno No No No in 1:48.4. Its Saturday Night was third.

Calicojack Hanover lowered his career mark with the win, his third of the year in five outings. The Luc Blais-trained son of Captaintreacherous-Charisma Hanover is owned by Determination of Montreal, Que. He now has 14 wins and $573,288 in earnings from 47 career outings. The win price was $5.50.

Trainer Garry Merner had three sharp winners on the 12-race card, starting with a pair of sub-1:50 performers in the second and third races. Rochester Flash ($4.40) claimed the front early and never looked in danger as he rolled to a 1:49.3 victory with Trevor Henry in the bike in the second. Ayeaye Captain Deo ($2.80) gave Merner back-to-back wins as the stallion battled off Figment (Scott Young) down the lane to score in 1:49.2, tying his lifetime mark, for James MacDonald. Merner completed his triple as Stingray Deo ($11.90), a Metro Pace starter last year, went coast-to-coast in a lifetime-best 1:52 with Mark MacDonald at the controls. Merner, following a career-best season of 86 wins, has already halved that total in 2026. The Guelph, Ont. resident is 43-for-217 for a 19.8 per cent strike rate this year.

Blinded By Delight ($5.80) and Twin B Empress ($13.80) took the $16,000 first-leg Pop-Up Series divisions on the card. The series is for pacing fillies and mares that have started for a purse of $12,500 or less this year and have not earned more than $50,000 in 2026.
