Blood Money Repeats In Charlottetown Preferred

Blood Money

A powerhouse performance from Blood Money in the $6,250 Preferred 2 Pace headlined an action-packed Saturday, May 2 card at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.

Blood Money, coming off a blowout win on opening day, romped again in the feature to deliver his fourth straight victory for driver Gilles Barrieau and trainer Ron Matheson. Leaving alertly from post five, the 10-year-old intact son of Sweet Lou-Blood Diamond controlled the splits of :28.3, :57.3 and 1:25.4 before pacing away to a decisive 1:53.1 victory by 5-3/4 lengths for owner Dr. Mitchell Downey of Saint John, N.B. Nuttin But Finesse (Mike Downey) was second while Shake N Blake (Ken Murphy) completed the triactor. The winner, now 37-for-151 lifetime, returned $2.60 to win.

Barrieau, Matheson and Downey teamed up again to close out the card in the 12th race as One Eight Hundred ($2.70) cut fractions of :29.2, :59.1 and 1:27.4 before sealing the deal in 1:55.1. Fast Louie (David Dowling) was second with Louie The Great (Corey MacPherson) third.

Trainer Jennifer Doyle backed up her five-win performance on opening day with another trio of victories on the Saturday card. Lady Devine ($21.20) lit up the tote board in sixth race, getting up in the final strides to defeat heavy favourite and stablemate Sweet Molly (David Dowling) in 1:57.1. Paul Langille engineered the winning trip for Doyle, who also won with Moon Bound ($2.40) in Race 10 in 1:56.2 and Mantario ($2.70) in 1:57.3 in the fourth race, both with Dowling in the driver’s seat. Doyle, P.E.I.'s leading dash-winning trainer of 2025, leads the current season's Charlottetown standings and is 15-for-59 overall.

Millenium Seelster ($5.20) won the evening's opener, the first race in front of the newly unveiled state-of-the-art video toteboard in the Charlottetown infield. Emma Christoforou of Moffat, Ont., owns the winning 10-year-old son of Sunshine Beach-Maurockin, who stopped the clock in 1:59 on top of a $584.30 triactor for trainer-driver Nicholas Oakes. Marc It Up (Jaycob Sweet) was second with a large gap back to J J Kinley (Vaughan Doyle).

The evening’s biggest upset came in fifth race as Edge Of The World ($28.70) rallied to score in 1:58.1 for driver Brett Leblanc, getting past Abc (Steven Murphy) late while Proudofyatoday (Keith Ford) hung onto third after cutting the mile. Leblanc of Charlottetown, P.E.I. trains the six-year-old Sunshine Beach-Mileys Big World gelding and shares ownership with Nolan Campbell of New Waterford, N.S.

Doctor Bombay ($3.20) edged out Perfection Hanover in a tight finish in the seventh race for Marc Campbell, while Reggie The Fourth ($2.10) was dominant in the eighth race for the Orwell, P.E.I. driver to double up his son, trainer Landon Campbell.

Following the sixth race, horsemen, friends and family gathered on the track to pay tribute to the late Len Walsh. A moment of silence was held for the longtime horseman.

Racing continues on Thursday evening at 6 p.m. at Red Shores Charlottetown.
