Morgan Trainees Win Two Miami Valley Opens

Carbine

Virgil Morgan Jr. stablemates Carbine and I Did It Myway took two of the three Open-class events at Miami Valley Raceway on Sunday, April 26, with Carbine capturing the featured $49,315 Horses and Geldings Open Handicap Pace.

Alta Revelry N (Trevor Smith) left well and took command of the field with Carbine getting away in second for Luke Hanners and Grantmeawish (Trace Tetrick) tucking in third in an opening quarter of :26. The field remained single file past the half in :54. As they moved onto the backside, Ardens Ace N (LeWayne Miller) pulled first-over, flushed out by Naturally Gifted A (Tyler Smith), and the two advanced on the outside as even-money favourite Alta Revelry N led to three-quarters in 1:21.3. As they turned for home, Alta Revelry N drifted off the pylons, opening up a lane for Carbine to attack from the inside as Ardens Ace N continued to grind closer on the outside. Carbine finished best up the rail to win by a half-length in 1:50. Ardens Ace N went a big mile for second while Alta Revelry N held for third.

Carbine notched his second win of the year in four starts and 40th lifetime in 119, pushing his earnings to $875,960. The eight-year-old son of Somebeachsomewhere-Shot Togo Bluechip is owned by Odds On Racing. He paid $5.80 to win.

I Did It Myway crushed his $41,096 Horses and Geldings Open III Pace opponents for Morgan and driver Trace Tetrick. He left alertly from post three and quickly cleared to the front, marching to the quarter in :26.3. As they headed past the stands for the first time, Night Shadow (David Miller) pulled out from sixth, eventually flushing out Hp Lis Shadow (Brett Miller) from third. I Did it Myway led them past the half in :54.4 while Hp Lis Shadow closed in slowly on the outside, Trace Tetrick stepped on the gas for the leader to open up by two lengths at three-quarters in 1:21.3. That lead expanded to eight lengths by the top of the stretch, and I Did It Myway powered farther away to win by 10-1/2 lengths in 1:48.4. Night Shadow finished second while Big Fritz (Tyler Smith) rallied from eighth to third in the stretch.

The win was I Did It Myway's third of the year in 11 attempts and 40th career victory from 119. The seven-year-old son of Captaintreacherous-Flyme To The Moon has now earned $1,669,026. He is owned by David Hamm, EVM Racing LLC and Glenn Phillips. The win price was $2.80.

Joelsyy Hanover came off cover to win the remaining Open event, the $43,836 Horses and Geldings Open II Pace. He got away sixth from the second-tier post 10 behind an early duel to the quarter in :27, with Rose Run Zane (Austin Hanners) coming away with control after going three-wide on the first turn. Tyler Smith angled Joelsyy Hanover out behind Revolt (Luke Ebersole) in front of the stands and kept his gelding on that cover through :55.4 and 1:23.4 middle panels before sending him three-wide as they swung for home. Joelsyy Hanover charged on the wide side down the lane and chased down Rose Run Zane to win by 1-1/2 lengths in 1:51.3. Martins Millions (Luke Hanners) closed for show.

The winning son of Jk Endofanera-Jans Luck has tallied twice in 13 starts this season for trainer Jessica Millner. She shares ownership in the eight-year-old with Andrew Coblentz. Joelsyy Hanover, now 31-for-165 lifetime with $695,175 in earnings, returned $17.20 to win.

Chris Page had a four-bagger on the 14-race card with Trace Tetrick, Luke Hanners and Tyler Smith each picking up a double.

Racing action returns to Miami Valley on Monday with a 4 p.m. post.
