But Why Repeats In Saratoga Open

But Why

But Why, the defending Horse of the Year at Saratoga Casino Hotel, made his return to the track's winner’s circle last time out and went the distance again on Monday, April 20 for his second consecutive $22,603 Winners Over/Open Handicap Trot victory.

But Why and regular driver Jimmy Devaux overcame their outside post seven in the early going to make the lead at the quarter in  :27.4 before clicking off a half in :57.2. The first-over Malibu Kid (Leon Bailey), coming from more than 10 lengths back in seventh at the half, kept plugging away and approached the favoured leader past three-quarters in 1:27.4. That tandem was joined by pocket-sitting Dewey Arnold (Jacob Cutting), and those three trotters slugged it out in the race’s final strides. But Why emerged victorious on a cold day in 1:57.4 by the slimmest of margins in three-horse photo. Malibu Kid was a hard-luck second with Dewey Arnold third.

But Why, who is owned by Steven and Laura Stewart, was a 14-time winner in 32 starts in 2025 and now owns two victories in four tries this year. Scott Mongeon trains the five-year-old Crazy Wow-Porque gelding, who has now earned $326,399 lifetime. The win price was $3.68.

Live racing continues at Saratoga on Tuesday with a matinee that starts at noon.
