Crack Shot, Strobe Lite Headline Mohawk Qualifiers

Crack Shot

A pair of O'Brien Award winning male horses from 2025 highlighted the 10-dash session of qualifiers on Friday, April 17 at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

One of those performers, four-year-old pacer Crack Shot, made his seasonal debut in the session's penultimate dash. With regular pilot Doug McNair at the controls, Crack Shot sat a loose pocket to pacesetter Captain Hurley (Travis Cullen) through fractions of :28, :58.1 and 1:26.3. Back more than two lengths at the head of the lane, Crack Shot sprinted home in :26.2 — drifting as he has previously — to collar a determined Captain Hurley by half a length with the mile timed in 1:53.2. Rideau Carleton mainstay The Light Speed finished third for owner-trainer-driver Guy Gagnon.

Trained and co-owned by Guelph's Gregg McNair, Crack Shot sports a mark of 1:48.2 and earnings of $744,092 for co-owners Dale Hunter of London, Frank Brundle of East Garafraxa and George Kerr of Gowanstown, Ont. In two seasons, the son of Bettors Delight - Beautyonthebeach has compiled a record of 11-5-1 from 24 starts, with his 6-4-1 summary and half million in earnings last year lifting him to divisional honours as Canada's Three-Year-Old Male Pacer of the Year.

After qualifying in 1:56.4 last Saturday, Strobe Lite dropped his time nearly two full seconds after a wire-to-wire 1:55 mile for driver James MacDonald but the son of Alarm Detector - Shine Bright was offstride under the wire. He was still a length better than Exactly (Louis-Philippe Roy) as those two trotters separated themselves from a group of squaregaiters that included debuting 2025 O'Brien Award winner Stormont Beautiful.

Canada's Two-Year-Old Male Trotter of the Year in 2025, Strobe Lite is owned by trainer Ben Baillargeon of Guelph, Ont., Claude Hamel of Orford, Que., Nunzio Vena of Bolton, Ont. and breeder Glengate Farms of Erin, Ont. The gelding posted a 3-3-3 summary from his 11 freshman starts with $379,921 in earnings.
