Logan Park Headlines Monday Mohawk Qualifiers
Three-time O'Brien Award-winning trotter Logan Park won his second consecutive qualifier of the season during the chilly Monday, April 20 morning session at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
Regular reinsman Doug McNair sent the Kyle Fellows-trained Logan Park to the front and carved out fractions of :29, :58.4 and 1:28.1 before holding off Monalishi, an O'Brien Award winner as a two-year-old and runner-up at three who kicked home in :27.1 after winning her first four-year-old qualifier a week ago for the Blake MacIntosh stable. Logan Park prevailed by half a length in 1:56.1 during the chilly spring morning with temperatures below zero.
A 44-time career winner with nearly $2.3 million in earnings, Logan Park is owned by Outofthepark Stable of Rockwood, Reg Higgs of Blenheim and Arpad Szabo of Bradford, Ont. The eight-year-old Archangel-Rite Outa The Park gelding won his first qualifier this year in 1:55.4 on April 11.
The Fellows-trained Ontario Sires Stakes Gold winner Mike Me Up was Monday morning's fastest winner on the trot, succeeding in his second sophomore qualifying start in 1:55.4 by 1-1/2 lengths over his fellow stakes-winning stablemate Touchedbyanangel and McNair. Louis-Philippe Roy got a pocket trip for Mike Me Up behind another OSS rival Crunchintheodds, who set splits of :29, :57.3 and 1:26.4 before being swarmed by the Fellows trainees in the stretch and finishing third. The winning Muscle Mass-Meghan C gelding is owned by Yolanda Fellows of Rockwood, Ont., Erna and Blair Corbeil of Leduc, Alta., and Mike McAllister of Beaumont, Alta.
The aptly named three-year-old pacing filly Be Perfect BG was victorious in her second straight qualifier, once again finishing ahead of another O'Brien Award-winning star from the Fellows stable, A Clean Deal. Trained by Anthony Beaton and driven by Roy, the New York Sire Stakes champion cut the morning's fastest pacing mile with panels clocked in :28.4, :58.1 and 1:25.3 before drawing away impressively by 6-1/2 lengths in a :27 final frame to stop the timer in 1:52.3. The Perfect Sting-JK Mardi Says filly is undefeated in five career starts for owner Ecurie Csl of Sorel-Tracy, Que.
Be Perfect BG was one of four qualifying winners on Monday for the Beaton barn. Other Beaton-trained winners during the 10-race session were three-year-old pacing colts Mega Moves (1:55.3), a two-time Grassroots winner last year, and Plankton Hanover (1:56), as well as the unraced three-year-old trotting filly Kenogami Bellini (1:59.2).
