Say Oui Streaks As Miller Wins Five At Miami Valley
Brett Miller guided Say Oui to her fifth straight victory as part of a five-win evening for the reinsman at Miami Valley Raceway on Tuesday, April 14.
Miller, who oversaw the mare's fourth win in a row a week ago, sent her to the early lead from post five, then briefly yielded to Ellice Island (Tyler Smith) at the quarter in :27.4 before immediately circling his mare back to the front. Chaprow (Trevor Smith) pressured Say Oui through the half in :56.3 until tiring on the backstretch, but there was no reprieve for the leader as Along Came Tom (Luke Hanners) went around the tiring Chaprow to attack Say Oui through three-quarters in 1:25.1. A dead-game Say Oui never let him by though and dug in down the stretch to win by a length in 1:55. Lions Tracer As (Chris Page) was third.
Say Oui is trained by Brittany Baker for Railroad Express Stable, Francis Doctor and Joseph Miller. The daughter of Marseille-Dws Jasmine is now 10-for-38 lifetime. She returned $3 to win.
Miller tallied his first win of the night in the sixth race, getting Pirate Princess ($4) home off cover. He then guided Nosmalltalk Ir ($4.40) to victory in the gelding's North American debut, scored with Say Oui in the following race, and completed his night with wins behind Bossa Nova Star ($3.40) and Go Accordingly ($2.60). The reinsman, now fewer than 30 wins away from 11,000, is 102-for-738 on the season. He has raced exclusively at Miami Valley so far this year and is third in the standings behind leader David Miller (139) and second-placed Chris Page (130).
Ron Burke pulled away in the trainers' standings with three victories on the 14-race card. He scored in the opener with Field Trip ($3), won the 10th with Booker Seelster ($6.80) and completed the triple with Shoot Some Hoop ($5.20) a race later. North America's leading trainer has 66 victories at Miami Valley this year, 21 more than Virgil Morgan Jr. and Heather France, who are tied for second.
After a victorious trip to Hoosier Park, Calculated Concept stepped up in class as he returned to Miami Valley on Tuesday and captured the $29,167 non-winners-of-six feature. Starting from post four, Calculated Concept and Tyler Smith joined a host of leavers but dropped in second as 8-5 favourite My Next Chapter (David Miller) broke stride to their inside. The field raced in a gapped-out single-file formation to the quarter in :27.2, and leader Volstarita (Luke Ebersole) got a breather to the half in :57.2.
Nelli Up (Kayne Kauffman) left the three-hole and went on the march down the backstretch as Volstarita picked up the pace to three-quarters in 1:25. Nelli Up had pulled even with Volstarita at that station while Calculated Concept continued to stalk them from the pocket and In The End (Page) sat on the outside fourth. Volstarita and Nelli Up battled nose-to-nose into the stretch, but Calculated Concept found room at the pylons and unleashed a burst of late speed to surge past the leaders and win by 2-1/2 lengths in 1:54.4. Tally The Tab (Brett Miller) rallied up the inside for second while In The End closed from the outside for third.
Calculated Concept, trained by Chris McGuire for Howard Taylor, took his third win of the season in seven starts. The four-year-old son of Tactical Landing-I Believe is now six-for-22 lifetime. He paid $7.60 to win.
Racing action returns to Miami Valley on Wednesday with post time at 4 p.m.
