Damn The Torpedoes Sinks Rivals In Miami Valley Feature
Damn The Torpedoes went full speed ahead while stepping up in class and winning his second race in a row, taking the $29,167 conditioned feature at Miami Valley Raceway on Monday, April 6.
Leaving from post one, David Miller floated Damn The Torpedoes off the wings and settled him in third as Sam Widger and Johnny Up went for the lead. After the field formed up single file, Damn The Torpedoes pulled from third to make a quarter-pole strike as they passed the first station in :28, but Johnny Up made Damn The Torpedoes work for it, with the latter only clearing as they approached the half turn. Still in gear and now with the lead, Damn The Torpedoes led them past the midway point in :54.4 and turned up the backside with Johnny Up on his heels.
Johnny Up popped the pocket nearing three-quarters in 1:23.1 and quickly drew even with Damn The Torpedoes, and the two leaders battled nose-to-nose around the final turn and to the top of the stretch. With an eighth of a mile to go, Damn The Torpedoes finally turned away a tiring Johnny Up, opening up and winning by 1-3/4 lengths in 1:51.4 over the closing Woodrow Blue Chip (Trace Tetrick). Johnny Up held onto third.
Damn The Torpedoes, a son of Always B Miki-Cantgetenuffofyou, scored his fifth lifetime win in 19 starts, bringing his career earnings to $96,340. The four-year-old Brian Brown trainee is now two-for-five this year for owners Milton Leeman, Alan Keith and James Beluscak. He paid $2.80 to win.
Chris Page had a grand slam on the 14-race card. Tyler Smith picked up a driving triple, with David Miller and Sam Widger each recording a double.
Racing returns to Miami Valley on Tuesday with a post time of 4 p.m.
