Midnight Mover Monstrous As Kanak Quadruples At Century
Century Downs kicked off its 2026 season on Saturday, April 4 with a 10-dash offering, dominated by trainer Rebecca Kanak.
Fresh off leading the training standings during the winter meet at The Track on 2, Kanak jumped out to an early lead on the Century Downs' training leader board with a four-win afternoon. Punctuating the four-bagger was Midnight Mover, an open-length winner in the $16,000 Preferred Pace.
Leaving from post three in the robust field of eight, Midnight Mover and driver James Jungquist settled away in sixth and off the front end early as three horses — including 3-5 favourite Shark Week — locked up in an early speed battle. Three-wide for most of the opening quarter, Shark Week and driver Mike Hennessy eventually landed on top after being stretched through a :26.3 opening quarter. Outlaw Game On (Logan Gillis) didn't find a place to pace along the pylons and pressed on first up. Grabbing that cover just after the three-eighths mark was Midnight Mover, angled into striking position by Jungquist as the half-mile time flashed up in :57.2.
Straightening up down the backside, Shark Week appeared vulnerable and Midnight Mover seized the opportunity. Jungquist launched a three-wide bid down the back and powerfully cleared his rivals to land on top. (Helping the cause, Shark Week and Outlaw Game On briefly hooked wheels as Midnight Mover made his move.) Up by three lengths as the third statlion was reached in 1:25.4, Midmnight Mover widened his win margin with every stride approaching the wire. The mile was timed in 1:53, more than 13 lengths better than his closest rival.
Outlaw Game On finished second but was placed seventh as both he and fourth-place finisher Shark Week were placed back due to interference to the field while having hooked wheels after the half. Thus, Rum N Custard (Kelly Hoerdt) finished third and was placed second, while Key Dragon (Chris Brown) finished fifth, was placed fourth and then placed third.
A seven-year-old son of Mystician from Bouncing Hanover, Midnight Mover picked up his first win in his first seasonal start. He's now a 19-time winner with $174,101 in career earnings. Trevor Williams of Landmark, Man. holds the papers on Midnight Mover, who returned $5.90 to his pari-mutuel supporters.
Kanak didn't find the winner's circle until the fifth race of the afternoon, delviering with Carving Credit (1:57.3; $3.90) and western Canadian newcomer Drew Campbell. Mike Hennessy engineered the winning trips with other two Kanak conquerors, Nonversation (1:56.2; $16) in the eighth race before completing the natural hat trick in the finale aboard Blue Powder (1:54.1; $5.40).
After sending out 69 starters this year, Kanak sports a solid 21-17-11 summary with $98,193 in purses and a 0.494 UTRS.
