After a solid off-the-pace debut one week ago, stakes winning speedster Ayeaye Captain Deo delivered an on-the-engine winning effort in the fastest qualifier on Friday, April 3 at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

In a sure sign of spring, Mohawk hosted an overflow card with 15 qualifying dashes on Friday with a number of those entrants appearing for the first time this season. Mohawk adds a second weekly qualifying session starting on Monday, April 13.

Of the 126 horses in-to-go on Friday, none tripped the timer faster than Ayeaye Captain Deo. The son of Captaintreacherous - Oceania made every call a winning one for driver James MacDonald, who hustled the four-year-old out from post seven in his morning test and then guided the Garry Merner trainee to a seven-length score in 1:52.2. After opening panels of :29.1, :57 and 1:24.4, Ayeaye Captain Deo closed in :27.3 to best Write Me A Rose (Doug McNair) and Chain Gang (Trevor Henry).

Gino Toscani of Mount Hope, Ont. owns Ayeaye Captain Deo, a seven-time career in his career with more than $317,000 in earnings.

On the trotting side, veteran trotting gelding Truffles Too made his first appearance of 2026 and delivered a wire-to-wire score for his connections in the swiftest trotting mile of the morning.

With trainer Mark Etsell at the controls, Truffles Too took off from his rivals as the wings of the gate folded and wasn't headed from there. Posting first half fractions of :31.1 and 1:01.1, Truffles Too stepped it up in the back half and trotted home in :58.4 to hit the wire in 1:59, three lengths the best. Seasonally-debuting Amigo Volo (James MacDonald) closed well for second with Devils Arch (Louis-Philippe Roy) in third.

Owned by Deanmar Sons Stable of Mississauga and Peter Miskolczi of Brampton, Ont., Truffles Too (Donato Hanover - Truffles) is a 27-time winner with more than $541,000 in purses accrued.
