Kanak, Hennessy Lead At The Track On 2
Trainer Rebecca Kanak and driver Mike Hennessy enjoyed a super start to the 2026 harness racing season at The Track On 2, topping the leaderboard for the central Alberta track's inaugural Spring Meet, which included six race days in March and concluded on Sunday, March 29.
Kanak had already secured the Spring Meet's training title before the Sunday afternoon card and extended her lead in the standings with two more victories on the finale courtesy of repeat winners Tahuya Velocious ($2.40) and Blue Powder ($9.20). The pair of pacers brought Kanak's win count to 10, double her nearest competitor.
Hennessy, the 2025 leading driver at the Lacombe mile oval who started the 2026 season strong by winning the first race on March 8, drove both of Kanak's successful starters on Sunday in addition to the Jacques Lambert-trained Hang On Sloopy ($29.70). He wrapped up the the Spring Meet atop the driver standings with a dozen wins.
Driver Blake Piwniuk and trainer Mathew Howlett combined to win the meet's final race with Joe Rich ($8) and finished as runners-up in their respective categories. Piwniuk's 10 wins at The Track On 2 during the month included five from the Howlett stable.
Third in the standings, trainer Rick Lancaster sent out back-to-back winners on Sunday to double his stable's win count and Kelly Hoerdt had six winning drives at the meet including two on the day.
Live harness racing will return to The Track On 2 this summer starting on July 19. In the meantime, racing in Alberta will shift to Century Downs on April 4.
