Dealin With Dewey Dominates Buffalo Open

Dealin With Dewey

Dealin With Dewey bounced back from a fifth-place finish last out as he took his second Open Trot victory in his last three starts with a gate-to-wire performance in the $21,233 co-feature at Buffalo Raceway on Saturday, March 21.

Dealin With Dewey, who trailed early in last week's renewal, was sent forward by Brett MacDonald this time and had no problem reaching the front. The gelding set splits of :29, :59 and 1:28.2, then strolled away from his pursuers down the lane to score by 2-1/4 lengths over Crazy Ritz (Jim McNeight Jr.) in 1:57 over a track rated good. Double Class (Kevin Cummings) took third.

Owned and trained by Sara Baillargeon of Guelph, Ont., the winning eight-year-old son of Wheeling N Dealin-Rockin With Dewey is now two-for-seven on the season and 30-for-145 lifetime with earnings of $500,559. He paid $3.12 to win.

Lip Reader A rolled wide down the backstretch and dug in down the lane to capture the co-featured $21,233 Open Handicap Pace.

In a race with a wide-open betting board, Toreador Gb (Kevin Cummings) pushed out to the lead, then parked Flag Party (Joe Chindano Jr.) through splits of :28.2 and :56.2 with Livonjaxandqueens (Denny Bucceri) in the pocket. All seven participants were tightly bunched heading down the backstretch the final time, but it was Lip Reader A (Drew Monti) who went three-wide into contention with Lanjo Lee (Kyle Cummings) on his back. Lip Reader A took command just past three-quarters in 1:25.4 and was pursued by Lanjo Lee into the lane, but he had more than enough left in the tank to hold him off by length in a 1:54.3 score. All Bets On Tex (MacDonald) made a big late move for third.

Co-owned by Vogel and Wags Nags LLC of Hamburg, N.Y. and Team Rice Racing LLC of Lancaster, N.Y., the victory was the second in three tries this season for the 12-year-old Lip Reader A. The son of Sportswriter-Strike Line has produced $423,104 in lifetime earnings and won 46 times in 173 starts. The Maria Rice trainee returned $8.04.

David McNeight III, Drew Monti and MacDonald all tripled on the 11-race program while Kevin Cummings registered a double. Trainers Mihajlo Zdjelar Jr., Sheena Cohen and Rice each had two victories.

Racing will return to Buffalo on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. with a 10-race program scheduled.
