Lyons Anitasangel Wires Western Fair Preferred Mares
Lyons Anitasangel secured her second victory of the season with an assertive wire-to-wire performance in the $12,000 Fillies and Mares Preferred Handicap Pace on Tuesday, March 17 at The Raceway at the Western Fair District.
Scott Coulter put her in play from post three, leaving out to the inside of the marching Justine Ray (Jason Ryan) and Charmbo Stormy (Samuel Fillion). Justine Ray backed into the three-hole while Charmbo Stormy pressed on, looking for the front, but Lyons Anitasangel rebuffed the 8-5 second choice into the pocket to set the opening quarter of :27.3.
The field stayed in line around the second turn after the early action, with Lady Hamish (Brady Galliers) making the first move as they straightened into the stretch the first time. That longshot was forced to brave the breeze through the half in :58 and onto the backstretch, giving a golden draft to odds-on choice Shoot The Whiskey (Travis Cullen) past three-quarters in 1:26.2. The favourite pounced as Lyons Anitasangel rounded the last turn on top, and Shoot The Whisky motored on the outside in the stretch, but Lyons Anitasangel held her off by a half-length to win in 1:55.4. Delta Sunrise (David Kelly) flew from last to third in the final eighth of a mile.
Lyons Anitasangel improved to two-for-eight this year and is now six-for-35 lifetime with $125,241 in earnings for Threelyonsracing of Brantford, Ont. Ken Oliver trains the four-year-old daughter of Captaintreacherous-Linda Lace Hanover. The win payout was $12.
An accident occurred in the first race when Laser, racing on the lead, broke stride entering the first turn and fell. The horse, driven by David Kelly, promptly got back up and returned to the paddock. Heza Handy Man (Mike Horner) was forced wide to avoid Laser, but no other horses were involved in the incident.
