Kurt Sugg notches 6,000th win

Kurt Sugg reached 6,000 driving victories as he circled the field with Get In And Go in the fourth race at Northfield Park on Sunday, March 15.

The Bowling Green, Ohio native dropped the Trixton-Mazda Hanover gelding to last in the field of six early. He then launched his charge to the outside past the quarter in :28.2, and Get In And Go then caught hung-out favourite Mohatu As (Dan Noble) nearing the half in :58.1 and pulled three-wide alongside the battling leaders at three-quarters in 1:27.3. The eight-year-old edged ahead of the inner two on the final turn, then kept battling to defeat a stubborn Mohatu As by a half-length in 1:57.2. Gabbys Rockytop (Aaron Merriman) was third. 

The winner is trained by Kurt Sugg and owned by Rebecca Sugg, Adam Friedland and Jamie Miller. He paid $16.80 in his 14th career win in 113 starts.

Kurt Sugg has won 6,000 races in 47,384 starts and recorded earnings of more than $42.4 million. The son of Ohio Harness Racing Hall of Famer Ivan Sugg, Kurt Sugg grew up in racing and made his driving debut in 1986. His best season was in 2020, when he racked up 384 wins. The horseman is 53-for-378 in the sulky this year. Sugg has also racked up 1,068 wins and $7.2 million in earnings as a trainer.

Aaron Merriman won five times on the 14-race program. North America’s leading driver in wins scored with El Toro Loco ($7.80), Spitfire Oversees ($3), Risenshine Seaside ($4.40), Macmorris Hanover ($3) and Bettor B Sirius ($4.40). Merriman, second in the Northfield standings behind Dan Noble, has tallied 164 wins overall this year in 793 starts.
