Angostura Hanover Dominates Mohawk Distaffers Again
Angostura Hanover became the first horse in Canada to hit the $100,000 mark in earnings this year as she continued her dominance in the $40,000 Fillies & Mares Open Pace at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Friday, March 13.
Since teaming up with driver Bob McClure a month ago, Angostura Hanover has won four consecutive races in the Open ranks. Trained by Kyle Fellows, the six-year-old Betting Line-Armbro Amoretto mare's earnings climbed to $108,600 this year and soared over the half-million mark lifetime for owners Dr. Peter Johnston of Cavan Monaghan, Ont., and Craig Watkins of Newcastle, Ont.
Leaving from post six in this week's eight-mare affair as the 6-5 favourite, Angostura Hanover ($4.50) cleared to command at the quarter pole in :29 then cruised through middle splits of :58.2 and 1:26.3 before sprinting home in :28.1 to score by four in 1:54.4 over a track rated "good" with a two second variant on a windy, wintery night. Sunshine Magic (Jonathan Drury) chased from the pocket to finish second in her best Open placing to date while late-closer Absolution (James MacDonald) had the edge in a four-across finish for third, hitting the board for the sixth time in as many starts this year.
A few races earlier, Badgirl Bridgette ($2.70) earned her fifth straight win as the 2025 Atlantic Breeders Crown champion prevailed off a gapped three-hole trip in rein to Louis-Philippe Roy, sprinting home in :28.3 to reel in runaway pacesetter Chiefs Dream Girl and McClure in 1:54 flat.
Badgirl Bridgette ended her multiple stakes-winning sophomore campaign with three consecutive victories in November against the top mares at Charlottetown Driving Park before returning to action this month and winning a pair of $16,000 conditioned classes at Mohawk. Bo Ford currently handles the training duties while the Stonebridge Terror-Whatabadgirl mare races in Ontario for 94-year-old Montague, P.E.I. horseman and owner Bill Lanigan.
Another conditioned series got underway at Mohawk on Friday, with this Pop-Up event being for trotters that started for a purse of $9,000 or less in 2026 and winners over $50,000 in 2025 ineligible. A pair of $14,000 divisions comprised the opening leg and were won by Hey Ralphie ($4.80) in 1:57.3, with Jody Jamieson sending the popular Robert Reid trainee down the road, and the pylon-skimming Eternally Hanover ($25), who wore down race leader Pinewood Hanover by half a length at the end of a 1:59 mile for driver James MacDonald and trainer Kyle Ruhl.
