Walter Weese Passes

In Loving Memory of Walter Weese

Longtime harness racing industry participant Walter Malcolm "Walter" Weese passed away peacefully at the Chatham Kent Health Alliance on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at the age of 83.

A resident of Chatham (formally of Dresden, Ont.), son of the late Douglas and Leta (MacDonald) Weese. He is survived by his sister Bonnie Hogan; sons Gregory (Tricia), Mark, and Joe; grandchildren Devon, Samantha, Trent, Hannah, and Brennan; and great-grandchild Izaiah. Walter will also be remembered by his ex-wife Patricia (Burleigh) Weese and several cousins, in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

Walter led an adventurous life and had a story for all occasions. As a young adult he found remarkable success as a harness racing driver and trainer winning countless races and track championships throughout the region. In his thirties he retired from racing returning home to Dresden to start Walter Weese Farms in Rutherford which he grew to become a successful Standardbred breeding farm. After leaving the horse racing business Walter enjoyed a second career in sales selling real estate, newspaper ads, used cars and even donuts with his son Joe. Walter was an avid fan of the Toronto Blue Jays and Maple Leafs.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Wolting and staff of the Thamesview Family Health Team, all the doctors and nurses at the CKHA for the care and the Community Paramedic Program, March of Dimes, PSW’s and nurses that helped in his home.

A Private Family Interment will be held in Dresden Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations to the March of Dimes would be appreciated.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of Walter Weese.
