The Track On 2 Kicks Off 2026 Spring Meet

Came A Cavalier

Came A Cavalier carried his winning momentum from over a month ago at Century Mile to The Track On 2, taking the $5,300 opening day feature in the sixth race as the 2026 spring meet kicked off under partly sunny skies during a windy Sunday afternoon on March 8.

Driven by Thomas Miller, Came A Cavalier ($3.90) was the 4-5 favourite from the outside post in a conditioned optional claiming pace and circled the field of seven at the half in 1:01.1 while forced three-wide in his backstretch brush to the front, then fought back when confronted from the inside by early leader Blue Powder and Mike Hennessy in a stretch duel. The seven-year-old Domitian Hanover-Dover Dolly gelding won his fourth straight race in 2:00.4 over the "good" going for trainer Brinsley Brooking Lutz, who also shares ownership with Harvey Jaeger of Airdrie, Alta. Blue Powder was a game second, just a neck back, while Mylittle Gingerman and Kelly Hoerdt rounded out the top three.

Lutz and Jaeger also had a 1-2 finish in the $4,000 fourth race with pocket-pursuer Kellys Chase ($8) catching the Miller-driven stablemate Hestonfreechips in a race of their own and drawing off by 5-1/2 lengths at the end of the 2:03.3 mile. It was one of four winning catch-drives on the eight-race program for Blake Piwniuk.

Lutz's opening day double was matched by trainers Rebecca Kanak and Mathew Howlett.

The first race of the meet went to the Rick Lancaster-trained Easy Money Maker ($5.40) in an eight-length romp in 2:04 to give Track On 2's defending driving champion Hennessy his first of two victories at the new Lacombe season.

Trainer Kevin Hildebrandt's homebred Baby Badger ($6.70), Alberta's 2025 Claiming Mare of the Year, picked up the first victory of her eight-year-old campaign as a 2:05 winner with Hoerdt in the bike.

The Track On 2's spring meet will run through March with 1:10 p.m. MDT weekend cards on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the month.
