Hasty Bid Captures Mohawk Open Trot
Hasty Bid sprinted home off a pocket trip for his second victory of the year in the $40,000 Open Trot at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Sunday, March 1.
The gelding showed speed from post five, securing a spot in second behind Mr Bluebird (Travis Cullen) as that one pushed forward to his outside and grabbed the front on the first turn. Mr Bluebird clicked off the quarter in :27.2 and strolled to the midway point in :58.1, and the first-up R Peaky Blinders (Tyler Borth) was unable to make an impact as the pacesetter raced to three-quarters in 1:26.4. Hasty Bid slid out of the tow with 3/16ths to go and began to roll as they reached the eighth pole, powering up in deep stretch to prevail by a head in 1:54.1. Mr Bluebird recorded his fourth straight second-place finish. Devils Arch (J.R. Plante) completed the triactor.
Hasty Bid is now two-for-six this season for trainer Paige MacDonald, who shares ownership with 1000063663 Ontario Inc. of Guelph, Ont. The six-year-old My Mvp-Sunshinenlollipops gelding took his 12th career victory in 60 starts and upped his earnings to $845,394. He returned $12.70 at the windows.
Stone Carver ($6.70), Cheddar Bay ($6.50) and The Writer ($12.20) took the $15,000 second-leg divisions of the Pop-Up Series. The event is for pacing horses and geldings who have started for a purse of $9,000 or less this year or have average earnings of less than $1,000 per start in five or more starts in 2026. Winners over $50,000 last year are ineligible.
