Herbertson Triumphs In Ultimate Driver Championship

Ultimate Driver Championship trophies

A grand slam of victories on the Saturday (Feb. 21) card at The Creek, Albion Park in Brisbane, Australia solidified James Herbertson's place as the winner of the second annual Ladbrokes Ultimate Driver Championship.

Herbertson emerged as the early leader after day one with 89 points and on Saturday, he added another 105 points to conclude the 20-dash competition with 194 to best his nine rivals. Inaugural Ultimate Driver Champion Angus Garrard tallied 142 points to finish second in a tie with Gary Hall Jr.

Canada's James MacDonald tallied up a win on Saturday and finished eighth in the standings overall with 115 points.

"It's pretty surreal. It's why I'm in the game -- my mom and dad, they couldn't make it tonight -- and all my family, without them I wouldn't be here. They got me started in the game and I owe it all to them," Herbertson said. "It's been a pretty crazy sort of 12 months. I lost my best mate and I've been able to go and win races all around the world and pick up a couple things along the way, but this is pretty cool. This is something else.

"You've got people from all walks of life in the biggest slot of all of them. Great people who have backed me from early on and have backed me the last couple of years and it's just great. You can't ask for much more, it's what harness racing is all about," Herbertson continued. "We'll be back, that's for sure."

The Ladbrokes Ultimate Driver Championship featured 10 drivers competing for $350,000 AUD in a 20-race series over two nights on Feb. 20-21. Drivers earn points in each race based on their finishing position to determine the winner.
