Crown Monarch, Dahlquist Hanover Crush At Flamboro

Dahlquist Hanover

Crown Monarch and Dahlquist Hanover dominated their splits of the featured $11,000 optional-claiming trot class on a foggy night over a track labelled “good” at Flamboro Downs on Thursday, Feb. 19.

Crown Monarch reigned from start to finish in the first co-feature for trainer-driver Justin Turcotte. The five-year-old stallion, fresh off a similar victory a week ago at a lower level, soared through the fog into the first turn, forcing two like-minded opponents to drop back and slot in line. He reached the quarter in :30 and moseyed to a 1:02 half with longshot Wheelin N Stealin (George Ketros) moving out before that point and putting the gears to the leader down the backstretch. A length ahead of the challenger at three-quarters in 1:32.1, Crown Monarch dispatched him on the final turn and opened up in the stretch to win by 3-3/4 lengths in 2:02 over a surface rated three seconds slow. Saulsbrook Cami (Austin Sorrie) held on for second over the closing Handsome Hank (Brett MacDonald).

A late-December acquisition by owners Michel Letarte of Boucherville, Que., Varinder Gill of Brampton, Ont. and Terry Cameron of Bowmanville, Ont., Crown Monarch started his season in Ontario after shipping in from New York and is two-for-six in 2026. The son of Father Patrick-Muscle Babe has won nine of his 66 career attempts, and he has earned $203,902. He paid $4.20 at the windows.

Dahlquist Hanover was made the 1-9 favourite following a win at Mohawk, and his supporters needed not break a sweat as the gelding romped in the second co-feature. With the track upgraded to a one-second variant, Dahlquist Hanover grinded his way to the front in a :28.2 first quarter and never let off the gas, reeling off middle fractions of :57.1 and 1:26.2 with an ever-increasing margin, and he stopped the clock in 1:55.4 with a 13-length cushion at the line. Arrakis (Jason Ryan) held off a game Masterwork (Samuel Fillion) for second.

Dahlquist Hanover won for the 20th time in 75 starts for owner Gino Toscani of Mount Hope, Ont. and improved to two-for-five on the season. The six-year-old Walner-Dangle Then Deke gelding has earned $225,813 lifetime. He returned $2.30 at the windows.
