Safe Conduct Holds On For Open Repeat
Safe Conduct dug in after a two-move front-end trip to take his second straight victory in the $40,000 Open Trot at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Sunday, Feb. 15.
Piloted by Bob McClure, the gelding glided out from the inside post to lead the group of six into the first turn. R Peaky Blinders (Tyler Borth) swung three-wide into the bend and rolled up to take over from Safe Conduct, who went back to the front at the half in :57. Safe Conduct opened up by two lengths at three-quarters in 1:26.3 but could not shake R Peaky Blinders and Mr Bluebird (Travis Cullen), who emerged from third. Safe Conduct came down the lane flanked by his two attackers, with Mr Bluebird doing the best work in late-stretch, but the pacesetter hung on by a head to score in 1:53.3. R Peaky Blinders finished third.
The sharp Safe Conduct is 2-1-1 from five Open starts this season. The seven-year-old son of Archangel-Safekeeping earned his 13th lifetime win in 60 attempts and grew his bankroll to $580,260. Camilla Christoforou trains the gelding for Irvann Holdings Inc. of Toronto, Ont. and Charalambos Christoforou of Campbellville, Ont. The winner returned $2.90.
Bettor B Going ($26) upset in the $20,000 Pop-Up Series Final, sneaking between horses late to get up for the half-length 1:53.1 victory with Jody Jamieson at the lines for trainer Paul Court. Nightime Dancer ($5.90) won the $12,000 consolation. The series was for pacers who had started for a purse of $9,000 or less in their previous three starts or were non-winners of $20,000 in a minimum of 10 starts last year. Winners of more than $50,000 in 2025 were ineligible.
