Saulsbrook Victor Wires Field In Mohawk Open Upset

Saulsbrook Victor

Saulsbrook Victor went gate-to-wire to score at 12-1 in the $40,000 Open Pace on Saturday, Feb. 14 at Woodbine Mohawk Park, securing his first victory since he returned to Mohawk in January.

He flashed early speed from post five for driver Brett MacDonald and settled into the top spot as the field reached the first turn. After pacing the quarter in :26.1, Saulsbrook Victor took a major breather to the half in :56, leaving him with more than enough to defend from the first-over Dublin Dasher (Travis Cullen) as that opponent mobilized first-up nearing three-quarters in 1:23.2.

Dublin Dasher chased the leader into the stretch, locking in pocket-sitter Brue Hanover (James MacDonald), and Its Saturday Night (Louis-Philippe Roy) wound up off cover down the lane. Saulsbrook Victor was full of pace late though, and he held off Its Saturday Night by a length to win in 1:50.2. Brue Hanover finished third.

Saulsbrook Victor’s win was his first of the campaign, which began with a fourth-place finish in his return start at Mohawk on Jan. 3. The eight-year-old son on Source Of Pride-Atlanta Girl spent much of last year racing in the Opens of Ohio and Kentucky and was most recently at Dayton Raceway. Ron MacDonald trains the gelding, now a 35-time winner with $889,445 in earnings from 143 starts, for Brett MacDonald of Freelton, Ont. The winner returned $26.60.

Fresh off his sweep of the Snowshoe Series, Rbstenacious T notched his fifth straight victory in the fifth-race optional-claiming event, which carried a purse of $22,000. Travis Cullen hit the gas on the stallion to reach past Zebs Krafty (J.R. Plante) for the lead in a :27.2 quarter, and the four-year-old son of Freaky Feet Pete-Aunt Marlene went without challenge through the half in :58.4 and three-quarters in 1:27.2. He turned for home with a sizable advantage and finished strong, holding a 1-3/4-length margin over the closing Longshot Panic (Jody Jamieson) for a 1:54 victory. Zebs Krafty was third.

Rbstenacious T’s win streak has his record at five-for-six so far in 2026, and the Jodie Cullen-trained stallion improved to 10-for-25 lifetime with $101,222 in earnings with the latest tally. He is owned by Ron Cullen and Travis Cullen of Dundas, Ont. and Deborah McLeod of Edmonton, Alta. The win payout was $4.80.
