Breeders Stakes Highlight Fraser Card
Fraser Downs' Friday night card featured a trio of $16,758 Mary Murphy Breeders Stakes for three-year-old fillies, which complimented the three Robert Murphy Breeders Stakes for colts and geldings.
Red Star Hottie dominated her Mary Murphy division, taking her third consecutive stakes victory.
With trainer Brent Beelby in the bike, the As Promised filly posted panels of :28.4, :59 and 1:28 en route to victory in 1:56.4 by one and three-quarter lengths.
The pocket-sitter, Silkys Got Promise (Darren Howald) finished second and Alexaastrordinaire (Jim Marino) recovered from an early miscue to finish third.
Red Star Hottie picked up her eighth lifetime win, which increased her bankroll to almost $95,000 for owner Robert Murphy of Surrey, B.C.
Meter Maid didn't let the outside post or her 25-1 odds interfere with her goal of winning tonight's second Mary Murphy division.
In rein to James Burke, Meter Maid blasted off the gate, reaching the first quarter pole in :28.2, but the fan favourite, Red Star Diamond (Brent Beelby), overtook the daughter of Usher Hanover and posted the following panels of 58.1 and 1:27.4. As the field entered the stretch, Meter Maid pounced on the leader and held off the hard closing Der Bingle (Jim Marino) for the win in 1:58.1 by a neck. Red Star Diamond was third.
The Heather Burke trainee scored her sixth lifetime win and increased her earnings to over $50,000 for owner Cindy Postnikoff of Surrey, B.C.
The final Mary Murphy split went to Nazko Shelley, a daughter of Presidential Ball, and driver David Hudon.
The post time favourite waited patiently in third as Pureform Bunny (Bill Davis) led the field to half in :59, then tipped out and advanced to the lead just before the third quarter mark in 1:26.4. With a :29.3 final effort, Nazko Shelley prevailed in 1:56.2.
Miss Prom (James Burke) finished second and the early pacesetter was third.
Nazko Shelley's fourth lifetime win lifted her earnings to over $20,000 for trainer James Mohorich and owner Bill Boden of Vancouver, B.C.
Trainer/driver Bill Davis and Happy Larry took the first Robert Murphy division in 1:53.2.
The son of Real Artist made the winning decision after the half in :57.2. Happy Larry, who was sitting third, advanced on the early pacesetter, Royal Morn (Rod Therres), en route to the third quarter pole in 1:24.4. With a :28.3 final kick, Happy Larry prevailed by two and three-quarter lengths.
Blessthebrokenroad (Darren Howald) was second and Royal Morn finished third.
The five-time winner increased his bankroll to almost $55,000 for owner Larry Schmidt of Abbotsford, B.C.
In the second Robert Murphy division, Metro Jiff and David Hudon closed well for the 15-1 upset.
Moonlight Bubba (Jim Marino) set the pace with panels of :28 and :58.4 as Metro Jiff sat back in fourth. Millbanks Viking (Bill Davis, Jr.) made a first-over attempt en route to the third quarter pole in 1:28, but failed to clear the front. Metro Jiff, who was shuffled back to fifth, sprinted home in :29.1 to win 1:57.4.
Moonlight Bubba and Millbanks Viking were second and third.
Hudon trains the son of Village Jiffy, who is a two-time winner with over $20,000 in the bank, for owner Bill Boden.
The final division went to Garden Gatefantasy and trainer/driver Gord Abbott.
Garden Gatefantasy carved out fractions of :28.2, :56.2 and 1:25.4. The post time favourite hung on by a neck for the victory in 1:55.3 against a quick closing U Promised (Billy Davis, Jr.). Taylor Special (John Hudon) nabbed the show spot.
The Island Fantasy colt, who is owned by the Garden Gate Stables of Victoria and the Seaspray Stables of Nanaimo, B.C., scored his seventh lifetime win lifting his bankroll to over $55,000.
