Its Saturday Night Captures Mohawk Open Pace

Its Saturday Night

Its Saturday Night returned from a week off and worked out a pocket trip to tally his second $40,000 Open Pace victory of the season on Saturday, Feb. 7 at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

The gelding got involved in the action early with a charge to the lead in a :27.1 first quarter, then yielded to favourite Brue Hanover (James MacDonald) for a two-hole trip through the half in :57. Its Saturday Night moved off the pylons after three-quarters in 1:25.2 to attack Brue Hanover while Poseidon Seelster (Brett MacDonald) aimed up the inside. Its Saturday Night motored past Brue Hanover in mid-stretch and rolled away to win by 1-1/4 lengths in 1:52.3. Brue Hanover held second with the closing Dublin Dasher (Travis Cullen) third.

Its Saturday Night is two-for-five this year for trainer Dave Menary and owner Pollack Racing LLC of Venetia, Pa. The five-year-old son of Always B Miki-Night Music made his 13th winner’s circle visit in 58 career starts and brought his earnings total to $484,316. He returned $5.10 to win.

Honolulu Vacation may have owner-trainer Cody Hawkins eyeing a trip to the stallion's namesake Hawaiian island after capturing the lion’s share of the $30,000 purse in the Pop-Up Series Final on a frigid night at Mohawk. Driver Daryl Thiessen had Honolulu Vacation away seventh to the quarter in :27 and brought him to the outside on the backstretch, catching cover from Tricky Mcwicky (Doug McNair) before the half in :56.2. Honolulu Vacation tracked that helmet around the final turn and through three-quarters in 1:25 before shifting out in the stretch and blasting home to score by 1-3/4 lengths over odds-on favourite Code Cracker (Travis Cullen) in 1:53.3. Needabankloan (Louis-Philippe Roy) was third.

Honolulu Vacation won for the second time in six outings this season and is now seven-for-64 lifetime with a bankroll of $108,920. Hawkins of Rockton, Ont. bred the five-year-old son of Betterthancheddar-Luxury Vacation. The win price was $13.10.

The Pop-Up Series was for pacers that had not started for a purse of $11,000 or less in their prior three starts or were non-winners of $40,000 in a minimum of 10 starts last year. Winners over $100,000 in 2025 were ineligible.
