Style For A Mile Upsets In Mohawk Mares Open
Last through the first half-mile, Style For A Mile and driver Daryl Thiessen circled a field of half a dozen distaffers to pull off an 11-1 upset in the $40,000 Fillies & Mares Open Pace on a wintery night at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Friday, Feb. 6.
The Kyle Fellows trainee rallied off cover in the stretch to score in 1:56.2 by three-quarters of a length over a "good" track amid blowing snow on a -10 degree night.
Leaving from the outside posts, stablemates Tells On A Roll (Travis Cullen) and Glenboro (Ed Hensley) raced 1-2 through fractions of :28.1, :58.3 and 1:27.3. Meanwhile, at the back of the six pack, Style For A Mile tracked the cover of Absolution (Todd Ratchford) around the final turn then stormed three-wide after that rival gained a short lead at the head of the lane with Tells On A Roll trying to battle back inside through the stretch. Guiding his first Mohawk Open winner, Thiessen got Style For A Mile up in time, edging out Absolution at the wire while Tells On A Roll, the 3-5 favourite looking for an Open repeat, had to settle for third with the winner's closing stablemate, Angostura Hanover (Trevor Henry), making it into the show photo.
Style For A Mile now boasts two wins and two seconds from her first six starts of the season for owners Yolanda Fellows of Rockwood, Ont., Blair Corbeil of Leduc, Alta., and Poppopx4 Stable of Richmond Hill, Ont. The seven-year-old Captaintreacherous-Injeanous Style mare, who joined the Fellows stable last fall, is now a career winner of 24 races and has accumulated earnings totalling $548,625.
Horseplayers who bet $2 to win on Style For A Mile received a $24.90 payout.
In other Friday action, a conditioned Pop-Up Series for trotters continued with trainer David King's Jokic (Trevor Henry) improving from a runner-up finish in round one to take a $12,000 division in 1:58.3 and the Michelle Olson-trained mare Classic Magic doubling up with a 1:59.1 score to cap off a driving grand slam for James MacDonald. This series is was written for starters for a purse of $9,000 or less in their last three starts (winners over $50,000 in 2025 not eligible), with non-winners of $20,000 in a minimum of 10 starts in 2025 also eligible.
