The Doctor Never Stops Learning
Don't tell Dr. Ian Moore that you can't teach an old dog new tricks.
Moore, who captured his first O'Brien Award of Horsemanship in 2015 — the same year that State Treasurer was named Older Pacing Horse and Horse of the Year in Canada — notched his third title in that category at the 37th O'Brien Awards, presented by Standardbred Canada and held at the J-AAR Expo Centre at Western Fair District in London, Ont. on Saturday, Jan. 31.
But winning that award early in the evening was just a sign of things to come for the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Famer. His star pupil from 2025, Beau Jangles, won both divisional honours as Two-Year-Old Pacing Colt of the Year and overall Somebeachsomewhere Horse of the Year honours. Moore had his name called once again as he was named Canada's Trainer of the Year — the second time in the last three years he's been voted as the best in his craft.
Before his multiple award-winning season in 2015, the veteran horseman had just one O'Brien Award to his credit. That title came in 2013 when Arthur Blue Chip won rookie pacing colt honours. Since Arthur Blue Chip, he and his stable have added 18 O'Brien Award trophies to his extremely well-decorated mantle.
When asked after the 2025 O'Brien Awards if his approach to his profession has changed much in the past decade, he was quick to reply that he continues to learn and he's open to learning despite a lifetime of knowledge accumulated in the harness racing industry.
"In the horse business, you never stop learning," said Moore. "I just turned 72 not long ago and there are probably not many days that I don't go onto the track that I don't learn something or see something that I never saw before. Just happened a couple of days ago...over 55 years in training and I saw something I never saw before.
"Every year I learn. I learn from a horse like Beau Jangles and I learn from some of the lesser horses as well. I try to treat them the same but with individual preferences for each horse. It's a long learning curve."
In this interview with SC's Jeff Porchak, Moore discusses his historic 2025 season, provides an update on Beau Jangles and more. The interview is the first in a series of interviews sponsored by Horse Racing Alberta.
