15-Year-Old Pacer Breaks 25-Year Drought For Trainer
Suffice it to say, it couldn't have rained in a drier spot for Bungalow Bill N and trainer Philip Kozak.
After a 14-year-old season without a win in 31 starts, 15-year-old Bungalow Bill N ($11) made his way to the winner's circle on Thursday, Jan. 22 at Rosecroft Raceway for his first win in his first start of the season. Competing in a Mid-Atlantic Drivers Club Amateur event, Bungalow Bill N made every call a winning one for driver Kyle Walters and tripped the timer in 1:57.
Owned and trained by Philip Kozak of Southern Pines, N.C., Bungalow Bill N (Bettors Delight - Strawberry Fields) went 0-for-31 in his 14-year-old year, competing mostly in amateur events for his owner-trainer. The win for the pacer was his first since a dead-heat in an optional claiming event at Shenandoah Downs on Sept. 28, 2024.
Kozak himself hadn't trained a winner to victory since Nov. 19, 2000 when Bell Mattlantic prevailed in a maiden conditioned race at Colonial Downs.
David Jarvis and Aaron Waxman's Timestorm ($5) rallied to a 1:56.4 victory in the co-featured $12,500 top-level conditioned trot for driver Corey Braden and trainer Stacey McLenaghan, while Phoenix Rising ($6) captured the co-featured $12,500 top-level distaff pace for driver Jared Moyer, trainer-owner Franklin Gannon and co-owner Elizabeth Gannon.
As a result of severe winter weather threatening the Mid-Atlantic over the weekend, the 13-race card on Monday, Jan. 26 has been transferred to Wednesday, Jan. 28. First post is 7:15 p.m. The Jackpot Hi-5 carryover in the final race stands at $2,329.97.
