Sid The Kid Scores Again; Perfetto Joins Millionaire's Club
Sid The Kid took command early and went coast-to-coast to win his second straight $40,000 Open Trot at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Sunday, Jan. 18.
He rolled out from post five and sailed to the front, leading four rivals after the early break of Usain Hanover (J.R. Plante). Sid The Kid cut the fractions unopposed, rated by Doug McNair to :27.4, :57.2, and 1:25.4 panels. Pocket-sitter Mr Bluebird (Travis Cullen) took the leader’s tow into the stretch, coming off the pylons with 3/16ths of a mile left to grind away at the advantage. He made it a close race in the final metres, but Sid The Kid crossed the line a head in front to win in 1:54.1. Hasty Bid (James MacDonald) finished third.
Sid The Kid is now two-for-three this year for trainer Ben Baillargeon and owner-breeders Tom and Elizabeth Rankin of St. Catharines, Ont. The win was the five-year-old Alarm Detector-Miss Congeniality gelding’s 13th in 68 lifetime starts, and he has now earned $293,350. He paid $4.60 at the windows.
With a fifth-place finish in the seventh race, veteran older trotter Perfetto made his way into harness racing's millionaire's club. The two-time O'Brien Award winner came into Sunday's contest just $259 shy of the seven-figure earnings plateau, and his fifth-place finish for trainer-driver Dagfin Henriksen pushed his earnings to $1,000,841.
Now 11, Perfetto (Majestic Son - Perfect Prelude) is owned by Gerry Haggerty of Camden East, Ont. In 171 starts, Perfetto has assembled a resume with 35 wins and 87 top-three finishes. Taking his mark of 1:51.4 as a six-year-old, he trotted back to that mark last year at the age of 10.
Trainer Jodie Cullen harnessed three winners on the 11-race card, bringing her seasonal win total to 20 in 92 starts. Pacino Hanover ($6) circled the field in the second race to begin the triple, Code Cracker ($13) scored a race later, and Wannabeabigstar ($3.60) closed from fourth-over at three-quarters to win the finale. All three were driven by Travis Cullen. Jodie Cullen, Canada’s leading trainer in wins last year, is eight victories clear atop the 2026 standings fewer than three weeks into the year.
