Menary Hits $30 Million With Mohawk Open Sweep

Brue Hanover

A sublime night at the office for trainer Dave Menary resulted in a money milestone as the trainer won both $40,000 Open Paces to surpass $30 million in career earnings at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Saturday, Jan. 17.

Menary reached the milestone with a one-two finish in the Open Pace as Brue Hanover went all the way and won by two lengths over Its Saturday Night. Brue Hanover, under the guidance of James MacDonald, dashed to the front early and cut fractions of :27, :56.1, and 1:23.4. He resisted the pressure from first-up stablemate Its Saturday Night (J.R. Plante) and kicked away to a 1:51.4 victory. Saulsbrook Victor (Brett MacDonald) completed the ticket.

Brue Hanover has won twice in three Open starts this year for owners Burke Racing Stable LLC of Fredericktown, Pa. and Weaver Bruscemi LLC of Canonsburg, Pa. The six-year-old gelded son of Stay Hungry-Blind Ambition has racked up 33 wins and $698,465 in earnings in 89 lifetime starts. He paid $4.70 to win.

Century Jamila started Menary’s top-level double in the Fillies and Mares Open Pace earlier in the night. Travis Henry had the mare away fourth, and she remained in that position through :28 and :56.2 early fractions until making the first move to the outside past five-eighths. She gathered a head of steam around the final turn and set her sights on leader Tells On A Roll (Travis Cullen), who hit three-quarters in 1:24.4. Century Jamila’s progress stalled as the field sprinted home, but she produced the most potent late kick and rolled to the front late to beat fellow closer Angostura Hanover (Trevor Henry) by a neck in 1:53.3. Tells On A Roll held third.

Century Jamila, while boosting her trainer’s earnings to $29,989,906, raised her own to $411,866 with her 20th win in 80 career starts. Pollack Racing LLC of Venetia, Pa. owns the six-year-old Bettors Delight-Exotic Pleasure mare. The win price was $21.80.

Menary is coming off a career year, during which he achieved new bests in wins (118) and earnings ($3,560,129) and earned an O’Brien Award nomination. Since his first season in 1999, the Cambridge, Ont. resident has compiled a career record of 1,093 wins and $30,019,906 in earnings in 5,666 starts.

The Snowshoe Pacing Series for three- and four-year-old males kicked off with two $18,000 first-leg divisions on the program. The series is for non-winners of two races or $30,000 lifetime as of Oct. 31, 2025.

The Tulsa King ($5.70) captured the opener for driver Todd Ratchford and trainer Mary Ratchford, nabbing Booker Seelster in a photo. The Tulsa King left sharply from post six and glided by that rival entering the first turn to provide the quarter of :29.1 before yielding to Booker Seelster (Doug McNair) on the backstretch. The latter topped the field through the half in :57.4 and three-quarters in 1:26.2 and led into the lane, but The Tulsa King grinded him down out of the pocket and got up to win by a head in 1:55.3. Cold Creek Pantera (James MacDonald) completed the ticket.

The winning four-year-old Shadow Play-Racey Miss gelding improved to seven-for-37 lifetime with $65,833 in earnings. He is owned by Josh MacDonald of Little Pond, P.E.I. and Mike Dicks of Wabamun, Alta.

Rbstenacious T was an open-length winner in the second Snowshoe split. After travelling fourth to the quarter in :28.2, Travis Cullen directed the four-year-old son of Freaky Feet Pete-Aunt Marlene to the lead, and the stallion took control passing the half in :58. Rbstenacious T tussled with Calypso Creek (Plante) on the last turn, then dispatched that foe and cruised to a three-length score in 1:54.3. Arthur Idlam (James MacDonald) finished second, followed by Calypso Creek.

Rbstenacious T is trained by Jodie Cullen for Ron and Travis Cullen of Dundas, Ont. and Deborah McLeod of Edmonton, Alta. The horse won for the seventh time in 22 lifetime starts and increased his balance to $62,522. He paid $2.60 at the mutuels.

The next leg of the Snowshoe Series is set for Saturday, Jan. 24 at Mohawk.
