Tymal Riggs Upsets In London Preferred
Tymal Riggs went from sixth to first in the last eighth of a mile to land an 11-1 upset in the $11,000 Preferred Handicap Trot over a track rated good at The Raceway at the Western Fair District on Tuesday, Jan. 13.
The Mark Etsell trainee slid back to sixth from his outside post seven for Travis Henry, while one slot to his inside, Insanity (Samuel Fillion) shot to the lead. Insanity had his way through early fractions of :28.1 and :58.1, with Cotton Candy Cutie (Brady Galliers) joining him first-over to three-quarters in 1:27.3. Tymal Riggs, third-over in sixth on the final turn, swept four-wide at the top of the stretch and closed alongside the second-over Amigo Mio (Austin Sorrie). Both surged past a tiring Insanity, and Tymal Riggs out-kicked Amigo Mio by a length to score in 1:58.4. Insanity finished third.
Coming off a pair of sixth-place finishes at Woodbine Mohawk Park, Tymal Riggs won at the Preferred level for the first time since September 2024. The nine-year-old Kadabra-All Filled Up stallion, owned by Etsell of Rockwood, Ont. now has 30 wins in 150 career starts and has earned $331,380. He returned $25.90 at the windows.
Lightly raced four-year-old Jakes Panther extended his win streak to five to kick off his 2026 campaign, winning a $7,000 conditioned event. Fifth entering the first turn, Fillion pushed the son of Panther Hanover-Bluejean Jaba to the lead at the quarter, and the stallion went all the way from there to score in 1:59.3 for trainer Larry Jewitt and owner-breeder Dennis Jewitt of Wingham, Ont. Jakes Panther is now six-for-seven and has earned $21,212. He paid $2.20 to win.
