Sid The Kid Wins, Accident In Mohawk Open Trot
Sid The Kid captured the $40,000 Open Trot, a race in which driver Chris Christoforou suffered a fall, at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Sunday, Jan. 11.
Sid The Kid sprinted away from post six for Doug McNair to cross over to the front before the first turn. He was then faced with Hasty Bid (Billy Davis Jr.), who drove on through the quarter in :28.1, and New Rules (Travis Henry) pushed up three-wide as they straightened onto the backstretch. Hasty Bid finally cleared near three-eighths before yielding to New Rules at the half in :56.1.
Sid The Kid then left the three-hole on the way to three-quarters in 1:25 and swept by New Rules as they came into the stretch. Safe Conduct (Christoforou) and Usain Hanover (Louis-Philippe Roy) charged after the new leader from the backfield but hooked wheels in the last eighth of a mile. Christoforou was unseated as Usain Hanover broke stride, and the driver was hit by the sulky wheel of Hasty Bid. Neither horse fell in the incident. Sid The Kid went on to win by 6-1/2 lengths in 1:55 with New Rules second and Pemberton (Bert Renaud) third.
Christoforou was alert and taken to hospital for evaluation, according to Woodbine on social media, which also reported that Safe Conduct sustained no injuries. Updates on Christoforou will be provided when available.
Sid The Kid took his 12th lifetime win in 67 starts and has now earned $273,350 for Tom and Elizabeth Rankin of St. Catharines, Ont. Ben Baillargeon trains the five-year-old son of Alarm Detector-Miss Congeniality. The win payout was $17.30.
