Baby Limbo Raises The Bar In Century Mile Preferred

Baby Limbo circled a field of strong mares in the final quarter-mile to capture the $16,000 Fillies and Mares Preferred Pace on Saturday, Jan. 10 at Century Mile over a surface rated good with a two-second variant.

Outlawguns N Roses (James Jungquist) stepped out to an early lead and reigned without challenge to the quarter in :29.2, while Baby Limbo settled in fifth. Phil Giesbrecht held the daughter of Captain Crunch-Wanda Bayama on the pylons while the backfield revved up around the mare, taking a shuffle to eighth and last while Senga Nightmare (Ryan Grundy) advanced to the front and set middle fractions of :58.4 and 1:26.1.

Baby Limbo took the inside route all the way home. Her seven foes all fanned out as they exited the last turn, giving Baby Limbo open road to charge down Senga Nightmare with a :27.2 last quarter and win by a length in a career-best-equalling 1:55. Senga Nightmare was second, followed by Outlaw Sharktastic (Nathan Sobey).

With her 2026 debut, Baby Limbo recorded her 17th lifetime victory and bolstered her earnings to $93,441 in 44 career starts. The five-year-old Matt Howlett trainee is owned by Don Howlett of West St. Paul, Man. She paid $7.80 to win.

The feature win highlighted a five-victory evening for Giesbrecht. The driver took the opener with Shadow Boxing ($7.10), who cruised off a front-end trip. He was then was promoted to victory after finishing second with Catitude ($5.80) in the third race, when Stainless Steel (Sobey) was first-placed-sixth for interference. Giesbrecht scored another off-the pace win in the fourth race with Ima Party Boy ($10), and after his Preferred score, rallied Smokn Joe ($12.80) three-wide on the last turn to take the 10th. The reinsman is now seven-for-17 on the first two cards of the year.

Trainer Chris Lancaster finished the 11-race program with a triple. He sent out winners Rocky Mtn Wine ($8.10), driven by Sobey to a wire-to-wire victory in the second race, Catitude, and Singing Ramona ($5.30) who won the 11th from the front-end with Sobey at the lines. Lancaster tallied his first three wins of the year in 11 starts.
