Sugar Pie Honey Prevails In Mohawk's Friday Feature

Sugar Pie Honey winning at Woodbine Mohawk Park

Sugar Pie Honey left one final win picture behind for her original connections before being claimed off a sweet score in the Friday, Jan. 9 feature Woodbine Mohawk Park, a $22,000 fillies and mares conditioned claiming pace.

Driven by Louis-Philippe Roy, Sugar Pie Honey left aggressively from the outermost post seven and set the tempo with panels clocked in :28.1, :58 and 1:28.2 over the 'good' track. In the stretch, she held off the pocket-popping Niagara Series runner-up, Kiki Dee Hanover (J.R. Plante), to win by a nose in 1:57.

After launching her four-year-old season with a victory in the same class a week ago, Sugar Pie Honey was the 3-2 second choice and paid $5.10 to win. The 3-5 race favourite, La Miki N (Jody Jamieson), tracked cover in the final turn and finished third, 3-3/4 lengths behind the claimed winner.

Owned and bred by Millar Farms of Stouffville, Ont., Sugar Pie Honey was claimed for $90,000 and completed her campaign in the Nick Gallucci stable with 11 wins in 23 starts and earnings totalling $167,695. The Bettors Delight-Kloof Street mare, who was last year's Kin Pace champion and runner-up in the Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots final, was claimed by A1stable of Dundas, Ont. and will now be trained by Jodie Cullen.

In other Friday night action, Southwind Infusion ($3) was a repeat winner in a conditioned Pop-Up Series for driver Jody Jamieson and trainer Ashley Lendvoy, taking a $15,000 division in 1:54.2. A runner-up to Southwind Infusion in the opening round, Gentleonmymind ($11.40) was a 1:54.1 winner in leg two for conditioner Anita Ouellette with Scott Young in the sulky while the Anthony Montini-trained Instantaneous ($12.50) and Billy Davis Jr. took the other split in 1:55. This series is for male pacers that were non-winners of $30,000 or not averaging $1,250 per start in a minimum of 10 starts in 2025.
