Bobby Bigwheels

Bobby Bigwheels closed down the 2025 harness racing season as he won the finale at Century Mile on New Year’s Eve, the last race of the year in North America.

The sophomore State Treasurer-Blush colt cut the mile to complete a training triple for Mathew Howlett. Under the guidance of Mike Hennessy, he paced fractions of :29.4, :58.4, and 1:28.4 on the way to a 1-1/2-length victory in 1:58.1. Titanic Hanover (Blake Piwniuk) rallied for place over Carro P Picasso (Kelly Hoerdt).

Bobby Bigwheels upped his 2025 tally to seven wins in 30 outings for owner Don Howlett of West St. Paul, Man. He is now eight-for-33 lifetime with $37,610 in the bank. He returned $21.60 to win.

Baby Limbo ($10.10) kicked things off for the Howlett barn, winning the sixth race in 1:56.1 with Hoerdt at the lines. Little Rhys Chick ($39.20) then romped at 18-1 in the eighth for driver Piwniuk, bringing fifth-year conditioner Howlett to 52 seasonal victories in his best year to date.

Travis Ellis repeated as the leading trainer at Century Mile with 28 wins, finishing two ahead of Howlett (26), who shot from fourth to second on the closing-night card. Hoerdt came in third with 25.

Phil Giesbrecht made it back-to-back driving titles via a 53-win campaign. Hennessy won a trio of races in the finale but fell one short of the dash-winning crown with 52 tallies. Hoerdt’s three winners on Wednesday gave him a final sum of 48, good for third place.

Racing at Century Mile resumes on Saturday, Jan. 3.
