Uriel Blue Chip Looks To Close Down Charlottetown

Harness Racing at Charlottetown Driving Park

The story of the 2025 Maritimes racing season reaches its conclusion in the 14th-race finale on New Year’s Eve at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park (CDP).

Uriel Blue Chip is the morning-line favourite from post five with Ken Murphy getting the driving assignment from trainer Jennifer Doyle for owner Max Webster Stable of Inverness, N.S. The five-year-old son of Bettors Delight-Bathsheba, coming off a hard-closing second-place effort, looks for the 10th win of his career in 89 starts.

Edge Of The World (Brett Leblanc, 3-1) has rail control after front-stepping to a third-place finish in his latest outing. J J Patrick (Brady Sweet) has post seven from the Ricky Armstrong stable as the 7-2 third choice. The other entries are Moonwriter (Marc Campbell, 6-1) from post two, Mac Anover (Jason Hughes, 8-1) from post three, St Charlesfireball (Adam Merner, 12-1) from post four, Marleys Boy (Myles Heffernan Jr., 4-1) with post six and Redwhiteandboots (Corey MacPherson, 10-1) with the outside post eight.

Race 14 will also finalize the trainers' and drivers' standings for the season with Marc Campbell about to put the finishing touches on his 16th straight driving title at Charlottetown. The two-time O’Brien Award for Horsemanship winner sits at 152 local wins in 2025, 10 wins shy of his CDP record of 162 wins set in 2017. He will also finish off a new Atlantic Canada purse-earnings record for drivers after becoming the first reinsman to pass $1 million in a season in the region earlier this year. He also set the previous mark of $998,701 in 2024. Gilles Barrieau is second in the drivers' standings with 122 wins, and Corey MacPherson is third on 105 victories.

The trainers’ title race is a closer affair. Merner leads the way with 62 wins, but Landon Campbell (58) and Doyle (57) are right on his heels. Landon Campbell has three starters in two races on Wednesday, but Doyle is within striking distance with nine shots over seven races.

Also on the evening, 14-year-old pacers Mighty Mouse and Well Did will make their final starts as they face mandatory retirement when they turn 15 on the standardized Standardbred birthday of Jan. 1.

Mighty Mouse will start from post eight in the opener for owner CC Stables of Middle Sackville, N.S. and trainer Chris Covin. The daughter of Million Dollar Cam-Georgies Puddinpie has won 44 races in her career and taken $151,295 in purse earnings in 319 starts.

Well Did has post three in the fifth-race Happy Retirement Pictonian Storm Pace for trainer-driver Paul Langille and owner Well Did Stable of Lower Onslow, N.S. The Well Said-Marnie Hall pacer is a 63-time winner from 357 starts with $219,840 earned.

First-race post time is 6 p.m. for the 14-dash card.
