Barns Demolished At Fraser Downs

Fraser Downs

Demolition of the Surrey, B.C. harness racing facilities at Fraser Downs extended to the backstretch barns last week.

According to a local news report by the Surrey Now Leader, the barns were all torn down as of Dec. 18.

The last races were held at Fraser Downs on May 2 when the Winter/Spring Meet concluded at the only Standardbred racetrack in the province.

Dismantling of the racetrack began immediately following the abrupt closure of Fraser Downs by racetrack operator Great Canadian Entertainment on Aug. 15, just weeks before the start of a scheduled fall meet, when the City of Surrey terminated the lease for the racetrack property located at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds for redevelopment plans.

Fraser Downs had hosted harness racing since 1976.

While the provincial government revealed in late November that the support racing received from expanded gaming will cease in 2026, Harness Racing British Columbia disclosed to its members following a meeting in early December that its Board of Directors had discussed a plan for funding and efforts to secure race dates at Desert Park in Osoyoos for the 2026 season. The horsemen's group stated it will share information with members once it has confirmed actions and finalized arrangements.
