T H Boomtown Blows Up The Tote Board At Charlottetown

TH Boomtown winning at Charlottetown Driving Park

A Boxing Day program loaded with holiday features included a jaw-dropping upset by T H Boomtown in the $5,100 Preferred 2 Pace at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.

The marquee moment came in race 15 as T H Boomtown detonated the tote board from off-the-pace in the Preferred event with a 1:55.2 half-length score over the "good" track for driver Gilles Barrieau, trainer Ron Matheson and Stratford, P.E.I. owners Dr. Don Ling and Wayne MacDougall. Brookdale Johnny (Paul Langille) was game in defeat, finishing second ahead of heavy 1-4 favourite Merigo Magic (Adam Merner). Wind Blown (Corey MacPherson) cut the fractions of :28.1 and :57.2 before losing a pair of shoes at the 1:26.4 three-quarter pole and backing through the field.

A popular winner of this class back on Nov. 22, T H Boomtown was dismissed as the longest shot on the board at 20-1 this time out and a $2 win bet on the four-year-old Captain Crunch-Ally Elizabeth gelding returned $42.10. T H Boomtown recorded his sixth victory of the season from 30 starts.

In the $4,200 Open Trot in race seven, Fight Song ($4.30) controlled every step, setting splits of :30, 1:00.1 and 1:29.4 before stopping the clock in 1:58.4 for driver Jason Hughes, trainer Ashley Gamester and owner Donald MacRae of Vernon Bridge, P.E.I. The favourite, Canada's winningest trotter of the year Buckhead Ridge (Marc Campbell), finished 2-1/2 lengths behind in second, while Rocket Blast (Corey MacPherson) completed the top three.

Fight Song, a six-year-old Kadabra-Fortunes Of Fables gelding, pushed his seasonal win count into the double-digits for the second straight year and went over the $250,000 mark in career earnings.

The Reg Affleck Memorial in race five, a $2,900 conditioned pace, went exactly the way the bettors drew it up as favourite Good Omen ($2.60) put the field away with authority to win by 5-1/2 lengths in 1:58.1 for trainer/driver Paul Langille.

Langille scored three wins as a trainer/driver during the 16-race card as Im Hungry ($7.40) was the best in race six in a 2:01.4 score and Impeccable Shadow ($8.60) won race 14 in 1:58. Langille also drove the Tammy Collings-trained Brokeandoutofgas ($13.80) to victory in 1:57.4 in race 13 for the driving grand slam.

Marc Campbell also drove four winners, including a pair trained by his son, Landon. The Campbells combined for wins with Phil My Beer ($8) in race 16 and Woodmere Kennedie ($3.40) in race nine.

In a $3,400 fillies and mares conditioned pace sponsored by PEISHOA in race three, Woodmere Honeymoon ($6.10) continued her strong form with Gilles Barrieau catch-driving the Carson Wilkie trainee to a one-length score in 1:59. The three-year-old daughter of Bet The Moon-Amoreuble Hanover sat the pocket through splits of :29.2, :59.2 and 1:29.2, then angled out and powered by even-money pacesetter Tobins Brownie (Adam Merner) to win for owner Christa Dunsford of Donagh, P.E.I. Elm Grove Mistress (David Dowling) finished third.
