MPHRC Amends Start Date For Automatic Purse Allocations
The Maritime Provinces Harness Racing Commission (MPHRC) has approved an amendment to the previously issued Directive respecting the implementation of automatic five per cent purse allocations to trainers and drivers.
At its meeting of the Commissioners held on Dec. 8, 2025, the MPHRC reviewed feedback received from industry stakeholders requesting an extension to the original implementation timeline. After consideration of that feedback, the Commissioners formally approved an amendment to the Directive to revise the effective start date.
As a result of this amendment, the implementation date has been changed as follows:
“Effective May 1, 2026, all racetracks conducting harness racing within the Maritime Provinces are required to implement automatic allocations of five per cent of purse earnings to the licensed trainer and five per cent to the licensed driver of each horse earning purse money.”
This amended effective date replaces the previously communicated Jan. 1, 2026 start date.
Racetracks remain responsible for administering these allocations and for ensuring payments are distributed directly to the properly licensed trainer and driver associated with each purse.
This Directive, as amended, is intended to establish consistent and equitable compensation practices for horsepeople across the region while allowing additional time for racetracks and industry participants to complete necessary administrative and operational preparations.
