Self Made Strong In Flamboro Preferred
Self Made went the long way over a track rated good to win the $11,000 Horses and Geldings Preferred Pace at Flamboro Downs on Sunday, Nov. 30, reaching the winner’s circle for the first time since joining the Gerard Demers stable.
The gelding stayed behind a contested early pace, settling fourth for Austin Sorrie while The Magic Moment (Garrett Rooney) swooped three-wide around rivals on the first turn for the lead. The first two splits went in :26.4 and :56.1, and Self Made launched first-up with a circuit to go and pressured The Magic Moment to a 1:24.3 three-quarters. Self Made eclipsed the pacesetter at that point but needed the final turn and much of the stretch to shake that determined rival, finally drawing clear in the last 1/16th of a mile to win by two lengths in 1:54.4. Batterup Hanover (Jason Ryan) rolled up to take second over The Magic Moment.
Self Made’s win came as he dropped down from the Woodbine Mohawk Park conditioned level after making three starts in that company since switching to Demers following his Oct. 12 start. The six-year-old son of Fear The Dragon-Arrivista Hanover, owned by Robert Bergeron and Chantal Trepanier of Laval, Que., has scored eight wins this year in 23 outings. He has amassed career totals of 25 wins and $314,428 in earnings in 120 starts. The win price was $5.60.
