Absolution Goes Last-To-First In Mohawk Open

Absolution

Absolution blitzed past all five opponents in the stretch of the $40,000 Fillies and Mares Open Pace to win the featured event going away on Friday, Nov. 28 at Woodbine Mohawk Park over a track rated good.

The mare showed little speed off the car, starting fifth from post two, while repeat-minded Tells On A Roll (Travis Cullen) glided to the early lead. The 9-5 second choice had no opposition through :27.4 and :57.1 early fractions, but 8-5 favourite Grit N Grace (Jody Jamieson) pulled the pocket while rounding into the final turn and went toe-to-toe with her rival to three-quarters in 1:25.

The field went three-in, three-out into the lane, with Absolution third-over and sixth. As Tells On A Roll and Grit N Grace duked it out, Absolution gathered a head of steam and sprinted past her foes with minimal urging from Todd Ratchford to win by a length in 1:52.2. Tells On A Roll battled for second to the inside of show finisher Grit N Grace.

Absolution extended her streak of top-three finishes to 11, claiming her third Open win in that span for trainer Jack Moiseyev. The four-year-old daughter of Mcwicked-Bet Ya is nine-for-32 this year. She has won 11 times and earned $200,560 in 39 career starts for owner-breeders Joanne Colville of Moffat, Ont. and Nancy MacNevin of Essex, Ont. She paid $10.50 to win.

There were two $15,000 Pop-Up Series first-leg trotting races on the card. The winners were Johnny Buckshot ($2.60) in 1:54 for driver Tyler Borth and trainer Katie MacNeil, and Jokic ($5.70) in 1:56.3 with Trevor Henry aboard for David Jim King. The series is for horses that have started for a purse of $10,000 or less in their last three starts and are non-winners of $50,000 this year. Non-winners of $30,000 this year in 10 or more starts are also eligible.
