Dow Clowater Passes
Longtime harness racing industry participant Dow Clowater of Burlington, Ont. passed away on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2025, at the age of 88.
The son of Clarence Milburn Clowater and Mildred (Stewart) Clowater, Dow Henry "Dow" Clowater was born on July 27, 1937, in the village of New Bandon, N.B. and was forever proud of his Miramichi heritage. He grew up in the Rabbit Town area of Fredericton, N.B.
Dow was a staff writer with The Daily Gleaner of Fredericton in the 1950s and wrote columns on harness racing for The Daily Gleaner and the Telegraph Journal of Saint John, NB. He had a 40-year career in the Standardbred horse racing and breeding industry, serving in various administrative positions with the Canadian Trotting Association and the Canadian Standardbred Horse Society and their successor organization, Standardbred Canada. Dow was a member of the nomination and election committees of the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame.
A member of Branch 60 of the Royal Canadian Legion in Burlington, Ont. Dow was voted its "Legionnaire of the Year" for 2005 in recognition of volunteer activities in the branch.
Dow was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Patricia Gayle (Kinzinger) Clowater and his sister Meda, and is survived by sons Jay Anthony Clowater of Burlington, Mark Andrew Clowater of Niagara Falls; beloved grandson Kayden Anthony Clowater of Niagara Falls; brother Robert Clowater of Penniac, N.B.; sisters Alta (Frank) Fazio, Fredericton and brother-in-law Donald Titus, and various nieces and nephews.
Services have taken place. Donations may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 60.
