Shark Week Retakes Century Mile Preferred Crown
Shark Week looked back at his best in the $16,000 Preferred Pace at Century Mile on Saturday, Nov. 22, wiring his foes for his first top-class victory since August.
Driver Mike Hennessy sent Shark Week, Century Mile’s all-age track record holder, on his typical route to victory lane. The gelding dashed to the lead from post three, cruised unbothered through the quarter in :27.4, half in :55.3, and three-quarters in 1:24.1, then resisted pocket-tripper Midnight Mover (James Jungquist) to prevail by a length in 1:51.4. Needabankloan (Kelly Hoerdt) was third-best.
The win appeared to mark the end of a recent slump for the fastest horse in Western Canadian history. After three finishes outside the top three in Preferred events, Shark Week has now won back-to-back races, and he was less than second off his seasonal mark in Saturday’s victory. He has won 16 of 22 starts this year for trainer Rod Hennessy, with 15 tallies at the Preferred level. The conditioner co-owns the son of Vertical Horizon-Shark Gone Bad with Lorne Duffield of Edmonton, Alta. Shark Week’s career totals are now 65 wins and $549,800 in earnings in 106 appearances. He paid $4.60 to win, the third occasion since 2022 that he did not go off as the favourite.
