Sandras Mystery In A Pari-Mutuel Puzzler At Century Mile

Sandras Mystery winning at Century Mile

Century Mile handicappers that solved a 34-1 mystery in the $16,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred Pace were rewarded with a huge payout on Friday, Nov. 21.

Sandras Mystery emerged in a blanket finish to prevail in the pari-mutuel puzzler and claim her first Preferred-level victory for trainer/driver Brandon Campbell, rewarding her $2 backers with a whopping payout of $70.80.

Outlawguns N Roses (James Jungquist), 9-5 favourite Stash The Cookies (Kelly Hoerdt) and Byby Baby Byby (Mike Hennessy) all made appearances on the lead through fractions of :28, :56.3 and 1:25.1, but Sandras Mystery defeated the usual Preferred players after stalking from mid-pack and getting shuffled next-to-last at the rail heading into the final turn. As the field of nine distaffers spread across the racetrack down the stretch, Campbell guided Sandras Mystery between horses in the middle of the track to prevail by half a length in a 1:54.3 career-best performance with a :28.1 final quarter. They were six-across at the finish line, with Outlawguns N Roses edging out Byby Baby Byby in the place photo.

Raymond Henry's winning homebred mare is co-owned by fellow Calgary, Alta. resident Jodi Loftus. The four-year-old daughter of All Bets Off-Skade, a former stakes-placed filly who was a closing third at long odds in her first Preferred distaff test of the meet back on Oct. 10, now has 15 top three finishes from 22 starts this year, including five wins, and $52,931 in purse earnings. With her ninth career win, Sandras Mystery went over the $100,000 lifetime earnings mark in her 36th race.

While Sandras Mystery stole the show during the back-half of the 12-race card, Kelly Hoerdt was the star of the early action, winning four of the first five races. Hoerdt kicked off Friday night with three consecutive wins driving his trainees Pullaway Ace ($5.70), Mister Itunes ($9.90) and Y V Larceny ($11.40), who took a new lifetime mark of 1:55.3, then added another in the fifth race with Dont Delete Me ($10). It was a perfect four-for-four night for Hoerdt's stable.
