Bobcat Claws To Feature Win At Plainridge
Bobcat held on by a head over the determined Halifax to take the conditioned trotting feature at Plainridge Park on Tuesday, Nov. 18.
Bobcat, driven by Brett Beckwith, took the lead from post seven in the $21,127 four-year-old-and-under trot and laid down fractions of :28.1, :57.2 and 1:27.1 before rounding the last turn with a three-length lead. When Bobcat turned for home, he faced a strong bid from Halifax (Jim Hardy), who recovered from an early break and was full of trot, gaining ground with every stride. But the wire came before Halifax could reach, and Bobcat hung on to win by a head in 1:57.4. Whatawonder (Ken Watson) was third.
Bobcat is owned by Archie McNeil and trained by Melissa Beckwith. The sophomore son of Gimpanzee-Lindys Stardust is now three-for-15 lifetime. He returned $9.20 to win.
Driver Bruce Ranger put himself back into first place in the drivers' standings as he won four races on the 10-race card, including a natural hat trick in Races 5-7. Ranger won with Arabellas Glider (1:57.2, $8.80), Tobasco (1:58.2, $7.60), Smokin Molly (1:55.2, $6.60) and Venice Blue Chip (1:54, $6.80), all in various TrackMaster events.
Ranger’s rival for the title is Brett Beckwith, whose only win on the card was in the aforementioned non-TrackMaster event. After the dust settled on Tuesday, Ranger now has 141 to Beckwith's 139 with only six days left in the meet.
Live racing will resume at Plainridge Park on Thursday at 1 p.m. There will be a $650 carryover in the Wicked Hi-5 pentafecta in the sixth race.
