Amigo Volo Takes Mohawk Open Trot

Coming off a third in last week's feature, two-time millionaire Amigo Volo notched another $40,000 Open Trot on his hefty belt on Sunday, Nov. 16 at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

James MacDonald teamed up with Amigo Volo from the rail to tackle the field of six trotters in the feature. Favoured Gaines Hanover (Jody Jamieson) was the first to the front, followed by Safe Conduct (Chris Christoforou) in second and Amigo Volo in third to the first quarter in :27.3. After the opening stint, Amigo Volo wrapped around to take over command of the timer, setting the half in :55.4 and three-quarters in 1:24.3. Safe Conduct was his closest foe, but Amigo Volo swelled to win by three-quarters of a length in 1:53.2. Safe Conduct was second and Usain Hanover (Louis-Philippe Roy) was third.

Amigo Volo is an eight-year-old gelded son of Father Patrick and the Yankee Glide mare Margarita Momma. Meg Crone trains the winner of 49 races and $2,946,853 for owners Pinske Stables of Plato, Minnesota and David J. Miller of Lake Mary, Florida. This season, Amigo Volo has pocketed $260,601 to go along with a record of 6-6-4 in 26 starts. He paid $5.90 to win.

Fancy Lettering ($4) dotted the I's and crossed the T's on the 11-race card on Sunday with a 1:54.1 victory in the $20,000 Pop-Up Series final for fillies and mares in for a tag of $8,000. Louis-Philippe Roy piloted the winner for trainer Corey Giles.

With the triumph in the series finale, Roy wrapped up a five-pack on the card with his other wins coming with Its Major Major A ($2.30) for trainer Rene Bourassa, Sid The Kid ($2.40) and Quebec Hanover ($6.80) for Ben Baillargeon, and Yyc On The Horizon ($2.60) for Malik Smith.
