Tells On A Roll Takes Open For Sharp Cullen Barn

Tells On A Roll

Tells On A Roll rallied from the pocket to win the co-featured $40,000 Fillies and Mares Open Pace on Saturday, Nov. 15 at Woodbine Mohawk Park, the highlight of three wins for trainer Jodie Cullen on the card.

Tells On A Roll blasted out of post four and crossed over to the engine entering the first turn, pocketing rail starter Grit N Grace. J.R. Plante promptly ordered that co-favoured rival to the front after the quarter in :27.1, and she complied in short order, leading unopposed to the half in :56.2. Co-choice Absolution (Todd Ratchford) was flushed out of third nearing the far turn and dashed up to the shoulder of Grit N Grace, who hit the gas to three-quarters in 1:25. As Grit N Grace put away Absolution at the top of the stretch, Tells On A Roll split out of the pocket and began to chip away. The leader was game into deep-stretch, but Tells On A Roll was resolute and kicked past her late to win by a length in 1:53.1 over the good track rated two seconds slow. Absolution stayed on for third.

Tells On A Roll took the Mohawk distaff pacing throne for the first time since August and improved to five-for-26 on the season. The mare finished third at long odds in the Breeders Crown on Oct. 25, the second-biggest cheque of her career behind her Indiana Sire Stakes Super Final win. The five-year-old daughter of Tellitlikeitis-Have Rock Willroll is owned by Paul Sanders of Surrey, B.C. and A1stable and Ron Cullen of Dundas, Ont. She is now 24-for-78 lifetime with $798,700 in bankroll. Her win price was $11.20.

Jodie Cullen’s triple-completing winners were Glenboro ($4.50) in the fifth race and Shanes Dream ($6.10) in the 11th. She leads the nation in wins with 192 victories and is striking at a 17.3 per cent clip this year.

Remember The Alamo strutted to his third win in his last four starts in the $40,000 Open Pace. The four-year-old hustled to the front from a pylon start, leading early before yielding to Calicojack Hanover (Chris Christoforou) near the quarter in :27.1. Tyler Borth sent Remember The Alamo to re-take command before the half in :55.4 and maintained a solid tempo to three-quarters in 1:23.2. Calicojack Hanover gave chase but made little impact on Remember The Alamo, who finished in :28 for a 1:51.2 victory. Calicojack Hanover was second, two lengths behind, with Captain Fear Not (Billy Davis Jr.) third.

Remember The Alamo is trained by Ben Baillargeon of Guelph, Ont., who co-owns him with Santo Vena of Cedar Valley, Ont., Nunzio Vena of Bolton, Ont., and Frank Cirillo of Kleinburg, Ont. The Captaintreacherous-Ameraway entire has won his last three Open starts, with one loss in a Free For All against powerful rivals two starts back. He is 14-for-42 lifetime with $381,758 in purses. His win payout was $3.60.

Harvest Series action continued on the 12-race card with a pair of $20,000 divisions for each gait of three-year-old males.

Jayport Cash got the dough in the first trotting split. Daryl Thiessen called for early speed to slot him into the four-hole from post nine while Goal Digger (Borth) went to the lead in a :27.3 opening fraction. Sapphire Steve (Phil Hudon) took over before the half in :57.2 but was soon under fire again from Goal Digger, who re-emerged from the pocket but broke stride on the last turn, which left Jayport Cash uncovered to three-quarters in 1:27. That was no problem for the Trixton-Jayportcashforlife gelding, who took off as they hit the stretch and rolled away to a 5-1/2-length romp in a career-best 1:56.3. Sapphire Steve finished second, followed by Bank On Lucas (Plante).

The win for Jayport Cash was the second of his career in 23 attempts. The Josh McKibbin trainee has now earned $41,230 for owners M&S Racing Stable Inc. of Rockwood, Ont. and Paul Badder of Croton, Ont. He paid $11.30 to win.

Thiessen and McKibbin came right back in the first pacing division with Strongman Hanover, who reversed a head defeat from the first leg as he reached up here to win by the same margin. Thiessen had the gelding sixth as fast-leaving rivals created a :26.4 first panel, set by Amberjack (Borth), who also put up the half-mile time of :55. Strongman Hanover joined the outer flow on the far turn, following Devils Wish (Travis Henry) to three-quarters in 1:24.1. In the stretch, that pair out-sprinted the rest and made it a two-horse dash to the wire, with Strongman Hanover getting his head up at the line for a 1:54 victory. Belmont Blazer (Travis Cullen) completed the triactor.

Strongman Hanover, a son of Bettors Delight-Sawyer, notched his fourth victory in 24 career starts and increased his earnings to $49,900 for Murray Cox of Rockwood. He returned $15.30 at the mutuels.

Trix Up My Sleeve doubled in the series with a first-over win in the second trotting split. The gelding raced third through the quarter in :28.3 and past three-eighths, starting his move with a quick burst approaching the half in :58.2. He slugged it out with leader Massedonia (Anthony Haughan) through the third station in 1:27.3, then fought past him down the lane to win by a length in 1:58. Shutter Green (Travis Henry) was third.

Trix Up My Sleeve, a three-year-old rookie by Trixton-Meadowbranch Vicki, has won five of his last six starts and is now five-for-15 lifetime with $66,250 in the bank. Jessica Hayter trains the gelding and shares ownership with Ed Hayter of Erin, Ont. The win price was $4.70.

The Tulsa King completed the Harvest Series action with a front-stepping win in the second pacing contest. He shot out to the early lead for Todd Ratchford, using :28.1 speed in the first quarter, then traded leads with Im Victor (Travis Henry), re-taking the front just past the half in :56.2. The Tulsa King rebuffed the first-up Parlay King (Thiessen) passing three-quarters in 1:24.4 and held off that resurgent foe down the stretch to win by 1-1/2 lengths in 1:55. Thai Tour (Borth) closed for third, just behind Parlay King.

The Tulsa King took his sixth lifetime win — and first in Ontario — and improved his bankroll to $37,969 in 30 career outings. Mary Ratchford trains the Shadow Play-Racey Miss gelding for Josh MacDonald of Little Pond, P.E.I. and Mike Dicks of Wabamun, Alta. The gelding paid $12.10 to win.

The Harvest Series is for Ontario-sired horses that are non-winners of $30,000 this year as of Sept. 30. The finals for the three-year-old males are set for Nov. 22.
