Badgirl Bridgette Beats The Mares At Charlottetown

Badgirl Bridgette

The three-year-old filly sensation Badgirl Bridgette once again took the spotlight on Thursday Nov. 13 as she knocked off older rivals in the $4,450 Fillies and Mares Winners Over Pace at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.

Leaving from post three, Badgirl Bridgette ($4.70) got away fourth as Sweet Molly (Brodie MacPhee) seized early control through a :28.1 opening quarter. The order stayed unchanged through the :58.2 half until Get Answers (Marc Campbell) launched first-over and Jason Hughes angled Badgirl Bridgette out to follow cover going to the three-quarters of 1:29.2. The daughter of Stonebridge Terror-Whatabadgirl then powered down the lane to get up by a length in 1:58 over a track rated sloppy and three seconds off. Shake N Blake (Ken Murphy) rallied from the backfield to grab second, with Get Answers finishing third.

The victory was Badgirl Bridgette's 12th win on the season in 16 starts for owner-trainer Bill Lanigan of Montague, P.E.I. The filly dominated her sophomore rivals in stakes events this year, culminating in an Atlantic Breeders Crown victory, and beat older opponents three times. She is 18-for-23 lifetime with $133,383 in earnings.

Whole Nother captured the $3,900 Winners Over Trot in a close finish. He charged out from post five to make the top at the quarter in :29.4, had an unopposed second split to the half in 1:00.2, and went toe-to-toe with the pocket-popping Hallofaride (Ryan Desroche) at three-quarters in 1:31.2. They slugged it out around the final turn and into the stretch, with Labero (Marc Campbell) surging up to join the fray late, but Whole Nother hung on by a nose over the latter in 2:02. Hallofaride was a half-length back in third.

Colin Sheppard of Brackley, P.E.I. owns and drives Whole Nother ($3.60), a five-year-old son of Nuncio-Undersong who is now 12-for-84 lifetime with a bankroll of $94,878. Morgan Sheppard trains the gelding.

The Jennifer Doyle barn wasted little time getting on the board on the 12-dash program as Elm Grove Mistress ($3) delivered as the heavy favourite in Race 1 in 1:57.4. Moon Bound ($4) then won the second race in 2:00. Both Doyle trainees were driven by Ken Murphy.

Driver Corey MacPherson tripled up on the program, winning with Th Spikey Mikey ($2.30) in 2:01.4 and Rosetown Mary ($2.90) in 1:59.1, both from his own barn, along with the Phil Kelly-trained Sagali ($13.80) in 2:00.2.

Racing continues at the capital oval on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
