Southernsunshine Sparkles At Dayton

Southernsunshine

Driver Brett Miller and Southernsunshine drew away from nine rivals in the featured $25,352 conditioned claiming trot on a cold and windy Veterans Day card at Hollywood Gaming at Dayton Raceway on Tuesday, Nov. 11.

Miller hustled the six-year-old Pinetucky-Southern Holiday mare off the wings to open up a three-length lead over A Blue Million (Luke Hanners) before the quarter in :27.1. The headstrong Southernsunshine rebuffed first-up challenges from Big Boys Edge (Sam Widger) at the half in :57.3 and Sure Did (Jeremy Smith) past three-quarters in 1:26.1. She then closed the deal with a :29.3 final quarter to record the 1-1/2-length victory over Sure Did in 1:55.4. Big Boys Edge edged out a fast-closing La Lolita (Josh Sutton) for the show spot.

Southernsunshine, trained by Stacey Van Huizen, recorded her 10th career win in 67 appearances. The winner is co-owned by John Stoll and breeder Claude Powers. She paid $13.40 to win.

In the $21,127 conditioned pace, Gonezo ($4.80) grabbed lead before the half and cruised to a 1-3/4-length score. He was fourth to the quarter in :27.1 for driver Tyler Smith, then moved off the rail in front of the grandstand and took over before the half in :56.2. He remained in command past three-quarters in 1:23.3 and repelled the pocket-sitting Fully A Dragon (Marvin Luna) and tripped the timer in 1:53. Believe In Tom (Marc St. Louis Jr.) completed the triactor. Lick Creek Stock Farm owns the winner, a sophomore son of Lazarus N-Osprey Blue Chip. The gelding has won two straight races for trainer Jace Sundeen and is three-for-18 lifetime.

Driver Jeremy Smith won four of the evening's 14 dashes.

The race week continues at Dayton Raceway on Wednesday, Nov. 12 with a 14-race card starting at 4 p.m.
