YS Queen Beth Rallies In Harvest Upset At Mohawk
The Harvest Series got underway on Monday, Nov. 10 for three-year-old trotting fillies with a pair of $20,000 divisions at Woodbine Mohawk Park where Ibelieveinangels held tough on the engine as the bettors' choice and YS Queen Beth dashed wide through the snowflakes at 14-1 to take their respective divisions.
Ibelieveinangels was saddled with the outside post nine in the field of Ontario-sired fillies who were non-winners of $30,000 as of Sept. 30 in 2025. Driver Doug McNair pointed the 3-5 favourite towards the front end early, racing in second and to the outside of the leading TH Monica (Jody Jamieson) through a :28.2 first quarter. Ibelieveinangels cleared and crossed over to the lead on the backstretch, taking the field to the half in :59.3 before reaching three-quarters in 1:29 clear by two lengths.
Turning for home, McNair began to call on Ibelieveinangels for more as Validus (Chris Christoforou) found racing room from third in line and began to close on the leader. Validus continued to close with Ibelieveinangels bracing for the challenge, digging in gamely nearing the wire to hold off Validus by a head in 1:57.1. TH Monica held for third, 4-3/4 lengths back of the winner.
Trained by Dave Menary, Ibelieveinangels ($3.30) has won three of her last four starts after beginning the year 0-for-13. The daughter of Green Manalishi S-Angel Eyes Hanover went over six figures in career earnings with the win, earning $60,960 in 2025 for owners Stephen Palermo of Etobicoke, Ont., and Glenn Bechtel of Stanhope, P.E.I.
The path to victory was quite different in the second division for YS Queen Beth (pictured above), who rallied from off cover after starting from the rail with Travis Henry in the sulky. YS Queen Beth was tucked away in sixth in the field of nine on the first turn while 1-5 favourite Chic Choc Rose (Louis-Philippe Roy) cut the quarter in :27.4. The tempo slowed to the half in :59 when YS Queen Beth flushed the cover of Hadley (Tyler Jones) and was towed into fifth from second-over at three-quarters while Chic Choc Rose reached that station in 1:28.2.
With nearly five lengths to make up at the top of the stretch, YS Queen Beth began to pick up steam three-wide to join Chic Choc Rose at the front while pocket-sitter Nightingale (Jody Jamieson) raced in between fillies. Nightingale and YS Queen Beth were trotting best of all late, getting by Chic Choc Rose in the final stages with YS Queen Beth edging Nightingale by a head on the wire to score in 1:57.3.
The win was the second in 19 seasonal outings for YS Queen Beth ($31.20), who is trained and co-owned by Mark Etsell of Rockwood, Ont., along with Robert Newton of Walkerton, Ont., Peter Porter of Port Dover, Ont., and Lindsey Turner of Georgetown, Ont. The daughter of Muscle Mass-Madrid Seelster has banked $49,785 in 2025.
